I'm interested in learning how many of you had your taste buds change after surgery? I love so many different flavors, and I'm not sure how I would feel if I all of a sudden no longer like certain foods. For example, I'm thrilled that the avacado is on the list of foods to eat as it is one of my favorites. If my tastes change, I wonder if I'll be sad or relieved. On the other hand, if I no longer like the taste of Cookies and other sweets, that would be pretty awesome.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

For me, my tastes became more exaggerated. I still enjoy the same stuff... but it's much more love/hate, rather than tolerate/like.

Sweets did become TOO sweet. I expect over time that will diminish.

Lots of people become dairy and egg intolerant. I have no trouble with either. I can't stand Protein Shakes. cheese is no longer very good. Too heavy and salty.

But, since I don't enjoy the stuff anymore, it's no real loss. Quite different from being told you can't have something.

After surgery, Water tasted like swimming pool water, a lot of chlorine. Everything was tasteless. I remember the first time I used ketchup a few months after surgery. It tasted like hot sauce. I loved eating crab legs prior to surgery. But butter was tasteless and therefore crab legs totally lost its flavor. Your taste will change the further you are out from surgery. So it is important to keep experimenting. I did find that spices did add flavor to my foods post-op and it helped to make meal palatable.

I don't enjoy Pasta anymore and bread is not high on my list. At first all the tastes were like hi-def in my month but now three months out I am back to normal. But I don't want the same type of carb foods now I crave protien and red meat.

I see how you might be concerned about not enjoying the same things but in my experience I don't even look at food the same. Your body does not have the same hormones after surgery.

Best of luck with it all! It was the best thing that ever happened to me and I can't believe I waited so damn long to do it!!!

Thanks for the input!

Hormones! I'm trying to research how they are affected, but I can't find much.

As it relates to eating, what can you tell me? My doc just said it changes.

You know how you have a favorite color? Yeah.. imagine going under the knife and your favorite color is red. Everything you own is red. You wake up, and red is too bright. You're drawn to all things blue.

That pretty much sums it up. Taste, and otherwise. I used to HATE cars that were non-metallic colors. They looked like toys. I like em now. So strange.

Tastes didn't change a lot for me, but aftertastes became exaggerated.

My tastes didn't change too much. For the first maybe 3 months there would be random stuff that would taste funny - exactly as others have said certain flavors were just exaggerated. I would make my poor husband taste stuff to just confirm it was me :) But generally I like all of the same stuff I liked before surgery - and sadly that includes the sugar and carbs as well. But, I don't crave them like I used to. I still enjoy the flavors but it's not like before surgery when it felt like my life depended on getting that next box of Cookies to binge on.

8 weeks out and my taste was affected quite a bit. Sweet things were an immediate no go. Regular sugar isn't as severely sweet to me, but sucralose which is in pretty much every shake or Protein Drink is a no go. That also took out propel and Powerade zero for me. I'm already allergic to stevia so my options are limited. I had to go to an unflavored Protein Powder in some fairlife milk to hit those early Protein goals after surgery. Thankfully my surgeon gets you on really food quickly.

The other strange thing was I couldn't stand the dishes from the dishwasher. I used a lemon scented detergent and I could "taste" it on my cups or silverware. It was awful. My husband and kids thought I'd lost my mind. It was like being pregnant again with the super senses. Even handwashing didn't help. I had to use disposable for about a week and then once I switched detergents a couple times, I finally was okay with it again. Totally didn't expect that.

So far, all food has been okay. Nothing tastes as good as it did before surgery, but that's been helpful because it keeps me from wanting to eat often. I'm more mindful when I do.

I'm 5 weeks post op. The other day I told my wife I wasn't crazy about something she'd made. She said, "Well you aren't crazy about anything since your surgery, so your opinion only 1/2 counts." It's true though...nothing thrills me...I suppose it will change, but right now I'm just not that into anything.

My taste for sweets has changed. I could care less about them. Tried something I really loved pre-op last week and didn't enjoy them one bit. It was Reese's cups. I don't mess with any type of dessert but I'll make some for others to eat for a party or family gathering. I don't care for fish or red meat. The only exceptions with red meats are bacon if it's there or if it's lean ground beef in chili.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
