Berry78 4,261 Posted October 14, 2017 What happens is your body was shocked by the surgery. When the body is shocked, it thinks the world is ending, and it shuts down all non-essential functions. Hair growth is non-essential, so it threw the "off switch". The hair stays on your head for about 3-6 months, then will fall out. After it falls out, it takes another 6 months to start growing again. (These are all approximations). So by the time you are 12 months postop, you should start seeing it regrow. The losses, when caused just by the surgery, should not be permanent. If you are low on Iron or some other nutrients, it may have trouble coming back. But you won't know that unless a blood tests shows a deficiency. Do not take extra Vitamins, especially iron, because it's possible to take too much. In the meantime, you could try a shorter hair style that will allow the remaining hair to fluff up more. You can try a wig or hats, or... I wouldn't recommend Rogain.. but I don't know anything about it really. I've lost at least half my hair, and am almost 7 months postop. It's still falling out, but might have slowed down a smidge. I cut mine shorter so it fluffs up more. 4 njgal, MSinger, LinzLou22 and 1 other reacted to this
Mytimenow17 99 Posted October 15, 2017 I take Biotin and Zinc along with my Multi-Vitamin, Calcium, probiotic, Iron, and B12. I am only 5 weeks post op, and praying my hair doesn't fall out which is why I started taking the Biotin and Zinc. I also use Nioxin Shampoo which is for thinning hair, and it works great! A friend started using it when her hair was thinning and she saw a huge difference right away as well. Best of luck to you! 1 Sosewsue61 reacted to this
Berry78 4,261 Posted October 15, 2017 Be careful supplementing with zinc. Zinc kinda works against Iron, so if you don't need it, it can do more harm than good. Lots if nutrients work in tandem. They have to maintain an ideal ratio to work correctly. Calcium/magnesium Sodium/potassium Iron/zinc, etc. ... OK, so I did a quick search and found a page where someone compiled the ratios. Don't take this page as gospel, but on first glance, it appears to be correct for the ratios I am familiar with. https://discourse.soylent.com/t/optimal-micronutrient-ratios/5049
Mytimenow17 99 Posted October 15, 2017 (edited) Oh wow, I had no idea! I told my Surgeon's nurse what all I was taking and she didn't say anything about it. Maybe she didn't know. :-/ Thanks for the info! I've been taking this combination for over a month. I will stop the Zinc. I had just heard that Biotin and Zinc together work really well for hair. I have really been constipated too, which I figure is from the Iron. Any suggestions there?? Berry78 4,261 Posted October 15, 2017 This is why the blood testing is so important. We don't really know what we need. Sometimes people like to load up on stuff and that's when things go wacky. A typical adult woman needs 8mg of zinc a day. (About 1/2 the recommended amount of iron). Since we can't absorb zinc or Iron as efficiently, we usually need more. If you are on iron supplements, then you may need additional zinc to balance it. But, we don't know how much of the iron supplement you are absorbing! Take a look at the zinc content of your food and Multi Vitamins. It's a good idea to make sure you are getting at least (pulling a # out of my hat).. 12mg. That is extra, but probably not too much. Guys probably should get 16mg or so since their d.v. is 11. As for Constipation, regular use of milk of magnesia or Miralax might help. (Try miralax first). MissRobin 93 Posted October 17, 2017 I am 2 years post op. I lost my hairline about 1-1/2" into my hair line. I didnt notice how bad it was until the summer when I pulled my hair into a pony and saw my hair line. I became anemic, Iron and Vitamin B deficient one year post op. My doctor monitors my blood levels now. After taking prenatal Vitamins (doctor recommended, and NOT I am not pregnant) and Biotin and eating more red meat, 7 months and my hair has started growing back. sleepingbeauty30 9 Posted October 18, 2017 Oh wow. I didn't know you can lose hair. Is there anything anyone can do to prevent this from happening???
Berry78 4,261 Posted October 18, 2017 Nope. It happens because of the shock to the body. Some people don't seem to lose much, so you can hope you're one of them.

Berry78 4,261 Posted October 18, 2017 Considering D.V. of Biotin is only 30 micrograms, 5000mg is plenty. 10,000 isn't going to be more effective and is just going to cost twice as much (and could potentially be less well-tolerated). 1-2 egg yolks meets your daily requirement. Sosewsue61 3,185 Posted October 18, 2017 Well Dr. Weiner has his patients take 10,000 of Biotin. The reason prenatal Vitamins work well is the extra folic acid (to prevent spina bifida and other things in the baby) - but it works on the mother's hair and nails. I always had good nails when pregnant. I have thin hair, but it grows fast. I take an extra folic acid, started 5000 biotin 6 months ago, and see new hairs near my hairline. It is not a lion's mane but it is improving. Now what happens with surgery for me - time will tell, I am crossing my fingers.
