Fellow October bandsters - help....

Recommended Posts

Ok, I just posted this post in the lap band support forum (placed it in the wrong one, meant to put it here)... It is the one titled FEED ME SEYMORE!!!!

Essentially, here is the copy/pasted version...

Ok. Ok.... bad pun from an old movie... but here's the thing - I know I only had the surgery LESS THAN ONE WEEK AGO (friday the 12th) So why is it that I am wanting food so bad now?

I am sooooo sick of this liquid only stuff. I WANT FLAVOR!!! I WANT TO CHEW!!! I WANT DAGGONE FOOD!!!!

ARRRGGGG!!!!!

What is wrong with me? I wanted the band so bad and now that I have it, I am hatin' it because I can't eat food yet (and I still have 5 weeks of no solid food... WTF?!?!)

How in the heck will I make it? I don't know if I should be ticked off at myself or just say - "this too shall pass" I am sooooo ready to eat something other than watered down Tomato Soup and crystal light drinks.

PLEASE someone tell me it gets better - tell me that what I am feeling is normal! Tell me that if I give in and eat I will puke it up and never do it again... I am actually almost willing to tempt it...

WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH ME???????

Needing major help,

Amy

Don't tempt it!! Every time I even think about eating something that I know I shouldn't, I just think about the physical damage that I can do to myself. We have stitches in our stomach. If our stomach has to work to digest something, you can rip those stitches out. We can cause our band to slip. I don't know about you, but the pain and discomfort that I went through for the surgery is still too fresh in my mind to want to have to repeat it anytime soon. But, it does get better. I have found the mushies to not be that bad. Even though they look pretty gross, most things do actually puree very well, and taste good to boot. Casseroles taste really good. I even had spaghetti one night. Most meats are good as well, especially if you have some sort of sauce that you puree with them (like BBQ). I love to cook, so I just look at it as an experiment and have fun with it.

it does get better. slowly. day by day. there were days i didnt think i could drink another thing, and yet i did. and here i am now starting on mushies. there were times i thought, "what have i done?", and more then a few break down moments with tears. but, i am so glad i had this done. i see a light at the end of a lifetime struggle with my weight.

for something to chew...i chewed ice...it was SO good..lol umm, what else? i had the broth from different flavors of Soup. i didnt think there would be much difference, but there really was. i made wassabubble's recipe for olive garden fagoli (sp wrong, sorry) soup. my family loved it and i loved the broth. the broth from beef veggie soup was really good too. oh, sucking on hard candies was good too.

i still have moments where i struggle. but i think to myself, i CAN do this. i know i can. and i know you can too. be strong!

Do Not Do IT! You didn't come this far to screw things up now! Sorry but its true! We all worked to damn hard to get approved/save our funds/get the surgery to not take the instructions from the doctors with some seriousness.

Have you tried different Soups. My drs said chicken noodle (small noodles), bisque, creams, and the ever-loving Jello are all ok. Get some variety I know it sucks but try it.

What about trying a few smaller meals with less ounces.

I think we all feel you on the liquids, today is my last day and I gagged down Soup at lunch.

Hang in there.

Thanks all... all I have been having is Tomato Soup (all the nurse recommended) and Water with some crystal light mixed in. I think that may have a lot to do with it.

I just called a girl that I met at my surgeon's office who was having surgery the same day and asked her how her feelings were going with all this.... she gave me some great news!! I had the diet all wrong... Where I thought I was supposed to be on Clear Liquids for the first week - it was just for the first 2 days post op and then full liquids until the 3rd week. So that opened up for me:

soupy grits/oatmeal, yogurt, pudding, and anything else that can be sucked through a straw as a liquid.

So the eating of the baby food bananas that I had was OK and the yogurt was OK. THANK GOD!!! because I was in tears after thinking I had screwed all this up and would have to beg to have them fix it. I am now even more proud of myself because I did Clear Liquids for longer than instructed.

So HOPEFULLY this will help with my nay saying self on how bad I want to eat.... I will definitely be having other Soup flavors and smoothies and yogurt and variety instead of feeling like I am doing something wrong...

However, I so sincerely appreciate all your advice because if I had eaten the solid food or anything else I could have seriously hurt myself. (Which I already knew in the back of my mind, but refused to let it come to the fore-front)... SO THANK YOU EVERYONE!!! I can't tell you how grateful I am for your suggestions - and please keep em coming... cuz I can use all the soupy liquid suggestions I can get.

Thanks,

Amy

I know how you feel. I have not had true hunger until today, but I sure have wanted a dang taco all flippin week!!! I have been on clear liquids for 6 days and my kids are starting to suffer! I am sooooooo cranky, and I too I wondered what the blankety blank blank blank have I done? Well, my hubby and I didn't shell out over 17 grand so I can just give up!

Today, in addition to clear liquids I ate about 2 oz of pudding, I AM A REBEL I TELL YOU. It did make me feel better...I know, pitiful.

When things seem hopeless, remember that soon we will get to eat mushies...yeeeha! I am already conjuring up things I will be able to eat at that stage. Masked cauliflower comes to mind...yummy and low carb!

But I digress....

Just realize that this sucky part will pass, it has to! And you and I will both be so happy we did this next summer when we are wearing a bathing suit and not cringing from the thought of others seeing us.

Take care and chin up.

Amy - I know how you feel. The day after surgery, I was friggin' hungry. My DH had surgery 4 days after mine and when I saw my doctor when he reported on my DH, I told him I was hungry and he said that was probably a sign that my swelling had gone down. He told me to do 2 days of full fluids and then I could start on soft solids.

Yesterday was my first day on the solids so I made 2 scrambled eggs for Breakfast and I couldn't believe I couldn't finish them. What a feeling to not be able to finish 2 eggs when I used to be able to have a full breakfast! I also ate them very gingerly because I was so afraid of them not going down.

For lunch I had a Protein shake and for dinner I had 2 slices of cheese and a few bites of shaved turkey breast. When I woke up this morning, I still feel kinda full.

So maybe this thing is going to work! Everything has gone down pretty easy so far, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I'll come across something that won't agree with me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
