Issues with certain foods

Recommended Posts

Hello guys, so I had surgery September 1 2017. I am currently under no food restrictions other than eating slow and no drinking while eating. I've noticed as I've introduced certain foods back that some really cause issues for me like all dairy products and occasionally meat. I was wondering if any one else has had similar diet issues and what they are doing/ is anyone vegan or vegetarian after surgery and is it helping? My fear is getting enough nutrients and food for fuel during the day.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm almost vegetarian. I had my surgery August 8 and when I !could eat whatever, meat went down fine. Now the smell really bothers me. I can certain things (one egg, sometimes, or a slice of bacon.) I eat a lot of smoothies, tofu and other things to get my nutrients. I do love all veggies so this really isn't an issue for me

Well, this is why most plans do have restrictions, to avoid this.

The best thing to do is to try one new thing. Wait a few hours and see how it settles.

I find that with meat you will probably get full quicker off less of it. Foods that go down easier you can eat more of. I look at this as a good thing. I never had problems with dairy. What issues are you having?

I can't tolerate dairy in any capacity I get sick. As far as meat I'm only eating chicken and ground turkey. I can take the smallest bites and I get sick. It isn't an issue of over eating because I can get sick off one bite.

As far as what the other person said I did have food restrictions and the doctor cleared me from them. I have followed the diet plan to a T and I'm struggling finding foods I can eat that don't upset my stomach other than going back to broth only.

Some people develop lactose intolerance after WLS. It sounds like you are just getting nausea with it though and not cramping loose stools.

eggs made me sick for a while and dense meats were hard to eat at 1 moth post-op. I think you just have to experiment and see what sits well with your stomach.

It takes a while to be able to tolerate all foods.

meat takes a while to get used to. The key is to make sure it is very moist and take tiny bites and chew very well. I started with chili and meatballs (regular beef ones, not turkey) with a bit of low-sugar Tomato sauce. When I started eating chicken I ate it with salsa, guacamole or hummus to moisten it up.

mandyf....Maybe you should try moist flaky fish instead of the chicken and ground turkey. I am now just being able to tolerate chicken and ground meats now at 9 weeks out. Fish on the other hand, went down smoothly for me. Other than that, get your Protein Shakes in so that your levels are still high enough.

So, flaky moist fish or tuna, Beans, cottage and other cheeses, scrambled egg whites, and Protein shakes were my go-tos for protein at 4-5 weeks out. I still can't tolerate beef now (feels too dense going down), but can tolerate everything else. I think that you will find that with time, you will be able to eat almost anything.

Good luck!

I’m on my 4th month post surgery and I’m vegetarian now. I can’t digest much without getting really sick or throwing up. I can eat: string cheese, soy Protein Snacks I order online, cucumbers, lactose free cottage cheese with berries, pistachios (100cal) and basic Protein Shakes. that’s about it!! I order my expensive soy protein items online and they are just fine. Low Carb, calorie. Pasta, pretzels, snacks. I was able to eat ground turkey for a while but can’t anymore and cannot digest anything else. I’ve tried.. I won’t go near heavy carbs though as I’m in the 180’s now and my weight does stall often even with gym all the time...

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
