% protein,carbs and fat

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I read a post where this person has a diet of 40% Protein, 40% complex carbs and 20% fat. Is this a good mix? I know this may sound stupid, but how do I figure that out in my daily diet???

Not really, IMO.

I try to break into percentages of 85% Protein, 10% carbs, 5% fat.

To figure it out, just look at your nutrion values and look at the protein/carb/fat content of what you're eating. Different kinds of foods have different calorie amounts.

1 gm fat = 9 calories

1 gm Protein = 4 calories

1 gm carb = 4 calories

Get your desired caloric intake, and then just do the math to find the percentages based on the number of grams you've eaten.

E.g. if you've eaten 80 gm protein, 90 gm carbs, 30 gm fat, you're at:

80*4 = 320 calories

90 * 4 = 360 calories

30 * 9 = 270 calories

Total = 950 calories

So then divide out by the total to get your percentages:

320/950 = 34%

360/950 = 38%

270/950 = 28%

If you enter your food intake on a program like fitday.com it'll figure the percentages for you. Only problem is, is can't tell the difference between good carbs and bad carbs (but I'd don't eat any bad ones so it's ok with me).

I try to stay under 30 carbs (which is not to say I always make it) and under 30 fats (we need fats for our hormones, and to keep our skin from getting too dry).

Its challenging to do less than 20% of your daily calories from fat. Many would suggest that is the healthiest approach however (data regarding breast cancer - reducing risk of cancer recurrence for pts with a low fat diet; closer to ideal body weight)

I'm a 33, 33, 33 for each area. Most times Protein are a higher and the others are lower, but if I'm a good third in each area I figure it's balanced and okay.

It looks technical but it's not, it's just basic percentages. Fitday is hard for me to use because I have to add everythind I eat, nothing ever seems to be in the DB. I can just do the math in less than a min. Much faster for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
