Decaffeinated Bev after surgery - Will caffeinated iced tea slow weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I’m two and a half weeks post op after having gastric sleeve surgery. Does everyone stick to all Decaf beverages after surgery ? I cannot find any fast food places that carry decaffeinated unsweetened iced tea, except Panera bread. My surgeon / dietician advises all decaf beverages. I was in a hurry today & got caffeinated unsweetened iced tea at Hardee’s. Will this slow my weight loss? I have researched all over the internet....thanks in advance for any information :)

Caffeine doesn't slow the rate of weight loss. In fact, caffeinated products promote a reduction in appetite and stimulate the metabolism.

Since most obese/formerly obese people are carb-sensitive, sugar-sweetened beverages cause stalls and/or cause the rate of weight loss to come to a screeching halt, but not caffeine.

FYI, I drink a minimum of 3 cups of strong caffeinated coffee daily in addition to a quart of caffeinated iced tea.

Since caffeine stimulates gastric acid secretions, most surgeons and dietitians prefer we avoid it during the immediate post-op period.

Thank you so very much for all the information you provided! Do you happen to know, when I can start having caffeinated beverages? I will be 3 weeks post op this Thursday. I feel a lot better. I really appreciate your post! Thank you so much!!!

Each surgeon has different guidelines. Some allow you to resume caffeinated beverages after 1 month, others allow them after 2 months, and a few demand you abstain from caffeine for life.

Caffeine is an important ingredient in my maintenance (100+ pounds lost), so I'd seriously question any doctor or dietitian who wants me to abstain forever...

And I'd disobey their orders. :)

My doctor allowed caffeine at 3 weeks. Caffeine is a diuretic and he wanted to ensure that I avoid dehydrated In the first few weeks.

I still limit my caffeine intake. This is a personal decision, as I was highly addicted. Once I got it out of my system, I'm careful bc it can be a trigger for me.

Since I made the switch to decaffeinated coffee pre-op , I decided that I would continue with decaffeinated coffee, drink 2 cups a day, and it's worked for me I truly don't miss the caffeine. Good luck to you.

I drink unsweetened black tea daily, usually about 32 ounces at least. I started drinking caffeinated tea again at about 6 months post op.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
