Bypass vs Sleeve, trying to decide

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had a Gastric Bypass after having had a lapband erosion at the esophageal junction? Have been told I had lots of scar tissue so I’m wondering which would be safer post erosion. I’ve heard the Bypass is better post lapband but with the scar tissue, it all scares me.

Definitely a question to take up with your doctor. If they leave the choice up to you, then your stomach must have healed well and either one will be appropriate.

My physician recommended the Lapband revision with Gastric bypass in my case because I have GERD with bad reflux (I should say "had" because NO symptoms at all one month out from surgery now), and also to help reverse my Diabetes. I'm happy to say my fasting blood sugars are stable and with good numbers, and so far no need for the weekly Trulicity injections I was on before surgery. Best of luck in your decision. I trusted my Dr.s recommendations based on my health history.

By the way, if this puts you at ease - when my Dr. did my surgery, he said afterwards that I had a lot of scar tissue around the Lapband. He also said my surgery went smoothly.

Hello, I’m going into surgery today, it will be a revision from lap band to gastric bypass.. I had my lap band removed in 2014 due to complications and erosion. Doctor suggested we go with the gastric bypass because of the scarring as well I was hesitant and even got second opinions, but fully understand now that we would be high risk in general because of previous surgery and with a bypass they are able to cut around the scared tissue and not into it like the sleeve. Really hoping this works for me. Had done great on lap band went from 260 to 135 and leveled off at 165 for many years, but did pick up bad habits and eventually got back into the 200s. When I had my lap band removed I believe I was 220 and right afterward my son passed away to an accidental drowning and my life turned upside down I gain all my weight back plus some now my current weight today is 297, HW was 341, and lost 42lbs by myself before surgery, I hope everything works out for you!! Good luck

Have you had your lap band removed already?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
