What was your mental state after surgery?

I'm almost 1 week post op and I've been having really bad anxiety and some depression. How did you feel after your surgery?

I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder.
I felt pretty depressed after surgery, mostly due to low energy and missing food.< br>I am about 5 weeks out and feeling better.
The weight coming off is helping but I am finding it hard to deal with my emotions without the comfort of food.

Was not depressed but I did feel like garbage for about a week after surgery. After about a week I started feeling better and have been getting better week by week. I will be returning to work in a few days and can not wait to get back to my routine!

Excited about the beginning of my new life!!! I think I could have easily gotten caught up with "what the heck did I just do?!" So I made a point of heavily focusing on the positives that are coming my way.

Very depressed and sad a lot. Mood swings the whole nine yards. Became addicted to something as well.

Im over a month sober now. Found my way back to God and even though my life has some difficulties and things aren’t perfect I know it’s going to be okay.

It honestly gets much better. I’m 21 months out. Seek counseling. It helps too!

Nearly 11 mths out and I suffer from apathetic feelings and anhedonia which are both in the same kinda group as depression. Never ever had it before my surgery and bam it was here two days after. Surgeon and gp honestly thought it would go away. Maybe it was from the anaesthetic etc or from having the surgery itself...
but unfortunately looks like it's here to stay

I've been pretty depressed too. I think I must have eaten my feelings away before and now I can't. I'm being very short with people and feel very sad. I hope it goes away.

It will get better trust me. It’s a huge shock to your body. You have lost your vice (food). Exercise a lot and minimize caffeine. It will be easier soon.

I hope so. I'm not drinking caffeine so I better up my exercise. Maybe now I'll have to deal with life instead of hiding behind food.

First, I'm very sorry that some of you are dealing with depression (I have MDD and its a tough task master without good tools - meds, psychologist, diet & exercise).

IF you are in a critical spot, you can text the CrisisTextLine, 741741. It's free, confidential and highly trained counselors who are also mandated reporters, in case you are in danger. They will help you through immediate crisis, and assist you in gathering local resources. I have volunteered with them for about 2 years, since retirement.

I am hoping that my post op experience will be positive, regardless of the physical issues. I'm praying for a new lease on life! And I have done lots of research, gathered recipes, sort of previewed in my mind situations that have been past triggers for eating.

Many people with GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) and/or MDD feel less anxious when they feel they have more control. So organizing and planning has been a good tool for me to get through.

That said, tomorrow is my surgery! Will be praying for each of you to feel better in your hearts/soul.

I had a very positive outlook on life after surgery. I knew that my life would be different. I was excited to finally put an end to the failure of keeping weight off after a lifetime of regain. I smiled often, enjoyed time with my companion and sleeve buddies, and literally took every day one step at a time.

I am now at the lowest weight that I have been in 20 years, and every sacrifice, every struggle, and every bit of pain that I endured has been totally worth it.

Know that this is but a temporary situation, and things will get better! Your future self 1 or 2 years down the road will be glad that you did this for your health and well-being!

Thank you for the tip! I have been feeling pretty out of control lately this I’ll give that a try. I think that’s a big part of my anxiety.

Releasing fat releases hormones like crazy and messes with any imbalances present and/or brings new ones. Exercise and sometimes meds can help you gain relief, make sure you also take your Vitamins and supplements.

I am not on the 'other side' yet, but for those suffering depressive symptoms please don't give up. This is exactly the right advice, plus the lovely words and helpful information from LillieDuFran about the crisis line.

Immediately after my surgery (the first two weeks) I really felt too strung-out to feel anxiety, depression or much anything else. I was just plain TIRED! But taking the Vitamins regularly (after my doc cleared me) helped immensely. I take my Multi-Vitamin and other supplements and a few meds every day and it really helps keep my energy at a normal level, plus the exercise that I do daily now, helps me better manage my anxiety.

Hang in there, we are here for you and will always be willing to listen.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
