Gaining Weight During Six months required visits

Recommended Posts

I have a required six months of dietary visits with my doctors dietitian. I have my last visit before my packet is sent off for approval on the 16th. I had gained weight the last visit, and im afraid I havent lost any from the last visit. Did anybody have weight gain before they start their liquid diet? Am I going to be denied because I gained?

I just keep hoping that they wont deny me as long as i dont gain during the liquid diet. I also keep telling myself "if we were good at losing weight we wouldn't need this surgery." so hopefully the insurance company thinks the same, lol

I've been told it is not an issue if there isn't dramatic weight gain. Most people fluctuate 5 pounds in a day so I would not worry about it.
If insurance gives you trouble see if you have an employee assistance program or advocacy service through your provider that might help. They've been a huge asset for me

You need to speak to your ins or verify their exact policy on their portal. Some ins can and will deny based on weight gain during the 3/6 month period you are working up to surgery.

I had a slight gain in the middle of mine.. and I was approved just fine. I have BCBS of Kentucky. I'd contact your insurance company just to be safe but I wouldn't worry too much about it!

During my 6 month supervised weight loss period, I lost at first and then gained. I was actually up 10 lbs from my first appointment when insurance approved me. I think I might have pretty lenient insurance. I lost that 10 lbs during my 2 week preop diet which means I was the same weight day of surgery as I was on my first appointment. Not proud of that, but like you said, if we were good at losing weight we probably wouldn't be getting surgery. :)

I have BCBS-OHIO. I had to do 6 months of weight management with my PCP as well. I did not lose not 1lbs. Then at my last two appointments I had gained 2lbs then 3lbs. So I was up a total of 5lbs and I was still approved for surgery. I believe if you are under a certain BMI you are not required to loose weight during your 6 months of your weight management program. My BMI was 48. Your bariatric coordinator would have went over that information with you if you were required to loose weight for your insurance to approve you. It doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about. But if you are still concerned call your insurance company and ask. I hope this helps a little.

Check with your insurance, I lost and gained the same 4-5 lbs during my 6months, it was the center that didn't want to send my paperwork into insurance because I had not lost any weight, which is part of the program's requirement but not my insurance. I meet the requirements with my BMI and sleep apnea for insurance approval. Good luck

Well, my original surgery date was supposed it be the middle of November, but my doctor did not feel comfortable sending my request off without me losing weight. I lost 17 pounds in two weeks and received me approval last Monday! I started my liquid diet today and will have surgery December 11th!

I didn't gain or lose the entire 6 months and was approved.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
