Has anyone experienced any issues staying asleep after surgery? I fall asleep pretty quickly, thanks to an Ambien, but I tend to wake up several times a night and need to listen to music or something to help me fall back asleep. Before surgery, I had problems falling asleep but then slept pretty soundly.

The sleep interruptions make it very difficult to wake up, and then I'm tired all day. Any advice? I don't know if this is related to WLS, but I'm five weeks out and I don't know if my body is changing too quickly which makes it uncomfortable at night.

Just thought I'd ask.

Yes this happens. I suffered from insomnia the first few weeks. Here's why:

When there isn’t a sufficient level of available glucose (sugar)— which is what the body uses for its main source of fuel — and glycogen levels are depleted, blood sugar and insulin are lowered and the body looks for an alternative source of fuel: in this case, fat.

This process can happen when a person fasting, after prolonged exercise, during starvation, or when eating a low-carb, ketogenic diet (or in our case, had surgery and are now not eating much)

And when the body begins breaking down fats for energy like this, a process known as beta-oxidation, ketones are formed for use as fuel for the body and brain. This is known as ketosis.

When we go into ketosis, it's basically giving our body energy, hense the insomnia, and why I could not freaking sleep for the life of me the first few weeks til my body adjusted.

Try having a little magnesium before bed (Calm works like a champ). Also you might want to give your body some Protein to feast on while you sleep. Both typically put me right to sleep and I sleep through the night. Magnesium and a protein shake! Sweet dreams :)

Omg. I’ve not been sleeping through the night for weeks! I didn’t think about surgery causing it. I take my unison and keep trucking. I’ll have to pay attention.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
