Holidays, Band before or after

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've recently started my journey to be banded, Had my first round of Doctors appointments this week, and I am very excited to get banned. My dilema is, Do i get banned before or after the holidays? Am I going to have the will power to stay away from all the food that is associated with that time of year. Has anyone been band around the holiday season, and did you wish you waited till they were over. I think I want to do it as soon as possible but am afraid of being miserable for the holiday season. :help:

I am getting banded 2 weeks before Thanksgiving, 11/8. I had to think about the holiday stuff , too. What it came down to for me is, was I going to postpone what I am very ready for so I can eat more food, or was I going to get on with a new phase in my life when I was ready to do it? There will always be something important happening no matter when surgery is done. My thought was, yes, the food is wonderful at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but there is so much more that I enjoy that I will be participating in with renewed health and joy

I agree with Cota129...everyone said wait until after the holidays...but why? So I can have one last binge? I say "Let's get on with it"!

OK got a couple of questions for you - do you want to be healthier and lose weight and start the new year with a new you or do you want to eat until you are sick and have gained another 10 lbs from eating all that junk during the holidays.

Which is more important to you...

If you want to continue your unhealthy eating habits then start after the 1st of the yr - if you want to start getting healthy do it now.

The band is not a magic cure to our issues with food it is only a tool that will do 25% of the work once you get to your sweet spot but the other 75% of the work is up to you.

You can eat around the band - you can get stuck from eating too much, too fast, etc. you can do this year round not just during the holiday's.

What are the holidays about???

Thanksgiving & Christmas - New Years

They aren't really about food.....

Thanksgiving is about Giving Thanks (that you have the band an are adding yrs to your life)

Christmas - The Birth of Jesus - (thank the Lord that there is such an invention that will help your portions control)

New Years (I am on my way to being a new person)

How bad do you want to start your new healthy life - it's not about food it's about you...

Good Luck on your quest......

Get banded ASAP. The holidays will just bring that much more weight you have to lose.

Since we're already banded we are going to have slightly different takes than you are, but seriously -- it's just food. I know that when you're on the other side that isn't so easy to say, but start changing your mindset now.

I've never really been an advocate for "waiting". Haven't you waited long enough?

There are always going to be events and occaisons for food you used to be able to eat. I assume if you have made it this far, you are in the right frame of mind to know you have to make permanent changes in the foods and amount you eat. You are still far enough away from Christmas that by that time you should be on solid food again. Keep your goal in mind and try not to think about it as deprivation but a positive change.

I am being banded on Dec. 6. I will be on liquids for 3 weeks and mushies for 3 weeks (my doctor's protocol). So I will not be on food for Christmas. Not a big deal to me. The holidays are about family and friends anyway, not the food. You can still go through all the tradition feeling good that you are not gaining weight that you will have to turn around and lose. Think about it anyway.

I hope to have the chance to be banded for my birthday Dec 4 as I am tired of living this life with all the weight. I got my psychological exam scheduled for Thursday October 18, and all I have to pay is $15. Boy what a relief.

My vote is the sooner the better for me.

I was banded DEC 4, 2004, I was still on mushies when Christmas arrived, made it through just fine.

You'll be much happier with yourself if you have the surgery as soon as possible, otherwise, during the holidays, when you're eating out of control, like you're on a mission to get it all in before the surgery, will just make you feel guilty....getter done!

Thanks to all that responded, It helps me greatly. It is the choice I was leaning towards. Its just hard to face the facts sometimes and the temptations. Thanks again ;)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
