18 days post op - no weight loss

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I had by pass on the 5th, 18 days ago.

I did 7 days post op of just liquids, 7 days purees and now I am on soft food.

On the 4th I was 239 and after 1 week after I went down to 226. It was the 12th. Since then I didn't lose a single pound. It is a little depressing also because for me it's difficult to reach 1000 kcal a day as my surgeon told me to do.... I am pretty active and i walk every day: I don't feel like going to the gym doing cardio unless I hit those 1000 calories.

Is this normal???

you should be seeing your doctor soon - follow up, talk to him/her. Other things affect your weight - washroom etc. (not wanting to get into details) I am stalled as well, but trust that time and continuing to stay the course will take care of it.

I had bypass completed on the 6th. I'm averaging about 700 calories a day. I got the clear last Wednesday to ease into regular food. I increased my carbs to around 50 yesterday and today and that has helped with my energy a lot! Actually walked a mile this morning. I was told to eat till your full and stop. So that's what I'm doing. I think our body's are still in shock from the changes and it is going to take a little while for everything to start moving faster. Make sure your getting your Protein to help heal faster. I'm down 18 lbs but I had a complication early on with a pretty high fever and litterally had no food for a week!! So I lost 10 lbs the hard way there. Hang in there and maybe talk to your nutritionist.

Also... I don't know how much food are you able to eat but I comfortably eat 1 cup of soft puree with no problem. Soft food might fill me up faster but I am impressed by pureed food or Peanut Butter I am able to eat. Obviously I do not abuse of this and I count every single calorie... But I don't know if this is normal!

Maybe it's just a stall I wouldn't panic.

And what about the amount of food I am able to eat ?
Last night I was able to eat in 40 minutes with no problems: 1/2 cup of split pea Soup with 1/5 Block of tofu in small pieces + a small 100 kcal of guacamole.

I eat it comfortably with no problems. Waited my 30-40 minutes before and after for the liquids.< br>

It's called the "3 week stall". Almost everyone sees the scale stop moving for about a week or two around 2-4 weeks postop. There is no way to prevent it.. just part of the program.

From a pre-surgery outsider looking on, this sounds like a lot of food for so soon after surgery? Maybe the soup and tofu are sliders though?

I agree!!! That's why I am worried!

The Soup is a slider. 40 minutes is long enough for the first part to leave. Keep meals to 20 minutes.

I don't understand the answer.

Sorry about that. Ok, so food in general doesn't stay in your new stomach as long as it used to. Liquidy food leaves very quickly.

A normal stomach holds food for several hours after a meal. Our sleeves and pouches empty in a matter of minutes for liquids, and POSSIBLY an hour or two for solid meat.

So because you ate Soup over the course of 40 minutes, the first spoonful that you ate had left your stomach long before you ate your last spoonful.

Keeping meals to 20 minutes will minimize this issue.

Personally I used this to my advantage because it allowed me to reach my goals in those early days. Constant sipping on my Protein sources allowed me to consume quarts over the course of the day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
