I had a question for the WLS vets and anyone who has had it done recently. Are there any "surprises" I should know about before I have my surgery? I had never heard about it leaving you with a new smell, that was surprising to find out. I have heard about the possibility of sagging skin and Hair loss, those worry me but I know they can be dealt with. Is there anything else? Are there foods I should avoid (other than the unhealthy stuff) or any tips or tricks you can offer?

After my sleeve Water tasted different! It went away after a while, but it was such a weird sensation.

What's this about a new smell? This is the first time I've heard that. I hope it's a good smell.

I was told due to ketosis or hormones that we produce a different smell after surgery and that it goes away after a bit. I will try to bump the post for you

Ok, that makes sense. I've heard your stomach makes loud noises all the time. Nothing yet to deter my from surgery on October 4th. Not even the headache I'm getting from the pre-op diet or the discovery that I'm not living the Protein Shakes as much as I did before (But still have the rest of the case to get through).

Just because you enjoy or tolerate something now, doesn't mean you will after surgery. It's so bizarre!

Tap Water still argues with me. Propel and Powerade work wonderful. I was lactose intolerant for a few weeks. If you have trouble with something, just keep trying until you find something that works for you.

I can't get Protein, I'm lactose intolerant, I had hunger pains, I hear weird noises from my stomach. My hair is thin, I'm tired all of the time. I miss popcorn, pizza, grilled cheese, and wings.

But guess what? I love "Stacey" that's what I call my sleeve.

Tomato Soup works well for me and I add genpro unflavored Protein Powder to it. Puree diet is tough but it's a short term thing.

Stalls happen even in the first couple weeks but they do end. You will lose again.

It hurts something awful but has been totally worth the loss.

Everyone's experience is different. The anesthesia put me in a lot of pain and nausea. I also ended up spending hours in recovery because my blood pressure went crazy high. My family was told I would be in my hospital room after about 2 hours and they ended up waiting about 10 hours so they were freaking out. The first 4 or 5 days my body was in shock and I was alternating between feverish sweating and violently shivering. My oxygen was low so I had to wear a mask and my mouth was so so dry. That was worse than anything. And then two weeks after surgery, my body had this weird autoimmune sarcoidosis thing so I had to go and spend another week in a hospital. I've been on prednisone for two weeks which is not something you want to try and lose weight on! But then I jump on these forums and see other people sail through the surgery with no complications. So, it's hard to prepare! But I would just go in with a good attitude.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
