Lose Weight: Burn off brown fat cells?

Recommended Posts

I ran across some interesting research on obesity out of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University. They are experimenting with Patches (specifically a degradable micro-needle patch loaded with nano-particles containing the experimental drug that is applied to the skin of mice). The drugs used were rosiglitazone and a beta-adrenergic receptor agonist. The goal of the research was to turn white fat cells into energy burning brown fat cells. The white fat stores energy in the form of triglycerides whereas brown fat actually takes energy and turns it into heat. Researchers observed a 20 percent fat reduction utilizing either of the two drugs and these results were similar in lean versus obese mice, improved fasting blood sugar and a 20 percent increase in energy consumption. Again these experiments were with mice. One should recognize that what is observed in mice does not necessarily translate into humans.

I wonder how this would effect overall health. When brown fat was discovered it was because the fat was burning so hot (due to a chemical the men were mining) that it killed them. I wonder if we have more brown fat if it will eventually cause harm after the excess white fat is burned? Is there a way to turn it back?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
