Chelle B 0 Posted October 16, 2007 Language is beautiful, in all forms. I find myself thinking in French at times because the English words might not fit the thought. I read 4-5 books a week. I just love words! So why the heck do intelligent, well-read people use such stupid expressions? Share the words that come out of your mouth without thinking - that you wish you could remove from your vocabulary. Two of my top offenses.... * Oh man, that's cool! * That's awesome! Sheesh, if it's so great why can't I do better than that? When I was in high school, my dad's company relocated to a small west Texas town. I met someone, and in the middle of a long (and interesting I thought) conversation, he looked at me intently and asked...............(drum roll)................. "What do you use all them big words?"
Gone4Now 4 Posted October 16, 2007 I wish I didn't use LIKE. I picked that up in the 80's, and I remember my mother HATED IT. So, of course I used it more. Now I have to force myself not to say it. Instead, I try to replace it with, "it's as if," so that way if "like" doesn't fit, I can't use it. Another on my list is, "Cool Beans" and "Dude". <sigh> I know..I know... I am a dork. travelgirl 3 Posted October 16, 2007 I am trying to NOT say "Oh, My God!" I say it all the time, without even realizing it. I never even knew I said it so much until my 7 & 10 year old niece and nephew were teasing me about it! I also cuss a lot, and I'm trying to reform from that, too.... Awesome That's cool Oh, Really? (a co-worker uses this, and I hated hearing it, so naturally, I picked it up. I want to rip out my vocal cords when I hear it come out of my own mouth)
Wheetsin 714 Posted October 16, 2007 I say "like" WAY too much. I have since I was in elementary school. I grew up in southern California and everyone said it there. Here, the only other person I've found who has a problem with it is my co-worker, also from California. We try to remind each other about it. DH says "yeah... no" instead of just "no." That drives me nuts. I'm always like, so which is it? Yeah or no? (see...the "like"...)
Nancy B 0 Posted October 16, 2007 That's awesome Chelle! Great post....LOL! Not that I haven't used this before, but I"m really sick of "24/7" and "From Day 1". And because I"m half British....I'm tired of the way they throw in "and at the end of the day" to sum up every conversation!

Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted October 17, 2007 I noticed people saying that "My bad" and that IS very strange. I hate it when my son talks like one of those gangster rappers, hardly pronouncing his words.

Wheetsin 714 Posted October 17, 2007 A lot of younger people here end every sentence (or just parts of a sentence) with "know what I mean?" only they kind of slur it out so it sounds more like "gnaw me?" No thanks!
