Fill Concern - need thoughts

Recommended Posts

Hello to all - Just a little background. I am 7 months post-surgery. I have lost 42 pounds to do. However, since August I have not lost any weight even though I have continued to have fills. I had them do a fill that brought me to 1.8 cc's and all I did was vomit. We backed off to 1.6 and things were much better. However, I noticed that my appetite was increasing rapidly. Yesterday, I went to the doctor and it turned out I had absolutely nothing in there. They talked about the different options that could be done, they opted to do a 2 cc fill and see if the fill would hold. They filled and after 3 minutes withdrew all the of 2 cc Fluid. The doctor told the PA to put it back in and for me to let them know by the end of the week how it was going.

My concern is if I was vomitting at 1.8 cc and I don't want to even imagine what 2 cc is going to do to me. Last night I went home and tried 2 ozs of very soggy mashed potatoes. Don't even ask how that went, not good. But it might have been too heavy to start with. For two hours, I had hiccup after hiccup. I tried I Gas-X and brought that and the mashed potatoes up.

So I need thoughts here. I would love to start the weight loss going again, but is it at the cost of vomiting every day. Or do I need to return to a stage 1 and wait to see if the port needs to be replaced because of a leak. Any advice is appreciated.:help:

Best,

Debbie

Hi there,

I have had 2 fills since I was banded on Mar. 27, 07. My regular doctor

recommended that I fast on liquids for the day of the fill and 2 to 3 days later

That was tough. My second fill was done in June with Fill Centers USA out of Cardiff by the Sea, CA. That doctor recommended I fast on liquids on the day of the fill and soft mushy foods for 2-3 days after that. I still have days that

I cannot eat until around 5 pm and then I can actually eat a little salad. On those same days at noon I will try to eat chicken breast and chew chew chew. Problem that arises at times are the hiccups. I will hold my breath and

eventually I can eat again. Sometimes it feels like my band is just too tight and then the next day I can eat meat and other foods. I have taken pepcid a couple of times to help with the tightness. I have lost 74 pounds and got 50 pounds to go. I would do this again, because I think the lap band may have saved my life. I am a diabetic and since all the weight loss my numbers are almost normal. My medication dosages have been lowered and best of all I am bike riding again. It has been almost 20 years since I have been on a bike. I feel great. So hang in there and let them find the right amount of fill and drink your Protein drinks and your Vitamins. You need to do this one day at a time and keep focused. Don't forget your Water too. Lots and lots of it. Take care and let us know how you are doing.

Gina

I agree - Liquids would be the way to go for now, and slowly advance to mushies, and lastly solids.

I get the hicups as well -- it is my sign I am full.

Best wishes!

Hello to all and thanks for the replies. I am going to my dr on Friday and they are going to take some Fluid out. We then are going to track how slow or fast moving this leak is. I asked him about the thicker saline and he told me that they do not use it. Didn't go into why and he went to another patient before I could ask. I will check on Friday what their reasons are. Did the liquids last night with the Pepcid and brought everything up. I think the 1.6 cc fill has been my best restriction so far until I lose more weight.

Thanks again to all for your help and thoughts!

Debbie

It does kinda sound like you have a leak. I mean if you lost all the saline in your band, that would be my first thought. I have found that most places don't use the thicker solution cause (duh!) it would not be very productive money wise for them to do it. You could try calling around to fill doctors to find one that does use it. Not one in my area does, I have already called! They gave me loads of excuses but I think it boils down to money. If the thicker solution takes longer to leach out you wouldn't be in their office as frequently. That is just my pessimistive perspective. LOL, I've really gotta work on my pessimism.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
