How long before I start putting on weight!!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I did my surgery roughly a year ago I was at 128kgs, I'm now down to 55kgs. I currently and have been eating very well over the past 6 months but I'm still not regaining weight. I'm wayyyy to skinny now and am at regrets doing this surgery . I feel normal and fit but I'm down to stick size. I rapidly lost weight after surgery as I ended up being hospitalized for roughly 2 months after surgery due to complications. My drs said I've returned to my natural body weight but I can't stand it.

I mean if you want to regain weight you need to make a plan (preferably with your surgeon/nutritionist)

You are certainly capable of putting on weight even postoperatively. But you want to do it in a way where youre gaining lean body mass and not fat, which means doing it slow while exercising and making smart decisions.

I've had a heck of a time regaining, too. My body's set point was lower than what I think is ideal - I tend to stick hard between 116-118 pounds and I'm 5'1" tall. Yes, this is technically a healthy weight. But I'm quite thin, bony underneath clothes, and nothing but loose skin and jutting bones, really. I've been stuck here for years.

I've tried regaining. I'm adding 500 calories a day, mostly fats and carbs but additional Protein, too. I think my next step is going to have to be building muscle. I think that might be the only thing that does it.

People don't really get it, because for some, regain comes so easy. But I can eat pure processed crap and actually lose weight. My body refuses to put on weight. I absolutely commiserate with you.

I've had labs run, they suspected a thyroid issue but nope. I eat constantly - it's a chore, like in the early days.

I'd love to see some solid advice, because nothing I've heard is working. My nutritionist said add what I've added, and if all else fails, eat a lot of nut butters and ice cream. That's crap advice.

Hugs, I hope it gets better for you, too.

Ok, the OP is 121lbs and over 5'8. She IS underweight, according to the BMI calculator.

Nut butters isn't "crap advice" at all. It's excellent advice. A single ounce of nuts (small handful) has almost 200 calories. Eating 4 handfuls of nuts a day will add almost 800 calories! They also have some Protein and carbs (and tons of Vitamins and minerals). Absolute powerhouse. I recommend mixing it up because each type has different nutrient profiles.

cheese is also a dense caloric bonanza. Dried fruit is too.

Ice cream doesn't have the nutrition we should all be seeking.

Possible meal plan:

Breakfast: 1 cup oats cooked into oatmeal with 1oz raisins and 1oz chopped pecans, 2T. heavy cream, and 2T molasses. (800cal)

Lunch: 4oz hamburger patty with Tomato Pasta Sauce (500cal)

Snack: banana with 1oz Peanut Butter (300 cal)

Dinner: 4 oz Salmon with cream sauce (300 cal)

After dinner snack: 6oz potato or sweet potato with 1T butter (250 cals)

This is 2150 calories with just food. Drink some calories too (2 quarts of whole milk has 1200 calories). It takes a surprising number of calories to begin gaining weight.. read some articles on re-feeding anorexics. Of course you're not an anorexic.. but the concept is the same.

If you notice, I didn't put any processed grains or sugar into the diet. You don't need junk food. Your body needs nutrition (vitamins, minerals, Proteins, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats) to get all the building blocks with which to BUILD you up.

Not knowing exactly how much you can physically eat at a time, I kinda guessed based on how much I can eat. Don't hesitate to go back and "finish" a meal an hour later. If you can eat more, by all means, do so!

What is missing is veggies. They have so few calories, that it's hard to squeeze them in. Salad Dressing, although full of calories, doesn't have much nutrition itself... the veggies have nutrition, but it takes SOOO much of them, that it's hard to justify salads.

To clarify what I mean: A single large fresh tomato will fill you up. It has about 25 calories. Even if you add 100 calories worth of ranch dressing, you are still only getting the nutrition of 1 tomato for 125 calories.

But, if you turn the tomato into Pasta sauce, then you get 3 tomatoes squeezed into 1/2 cup sauce, 75 calories. Add some fat, and suddenly it has the nutrition of 3 whole tomatoes, plus the added fat, 175 calories, and it's only 1/2 cup, so you can pour it onto some meat for more calories and protein.

Since we are working with limited space, we have to squeeze as much goodness into that space as possible.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
