I was in the hospital from 3 days/2 nights during which time I got IV pain meds for 24 hours until I had a leak test and was transferred to Vicoden. The pain was the worst the first couple days and began get better once I was home.

Walk, walk, walk is the best thing you can do. Get that gas moving and out because that's the painful part and it does take awhile. It does get better though, I was back to work by 2 weeks post op.

My doctor said for sleeve patients it's 2 nights in the hospital and for bypass it's 3 nights. It really makes me wonder how each practice can be so different.

My Dr said it's one night for sleeve and 2 nights for bypass.

Obviously every doctor has their own set of rules regarding the surgeries and post-op care and what not. But if you are in pain please DO NOT WORRY about being the whiny patient and just CALL YOUR OFFICE! They would much rather get multiple phone calls from you and make sure everything is okay than not. I'm sorry you are/were having so much pain. The first few days after surgery I felt pretty miserable and most of it was back pain from lying down for so long (and from cramps since I got my period two days post op, ugh). I found that sitting up and doing really gentle stretching helped, alternating using a heated rice bag and ice pack on my back helped, and warm showers (with incisions protected).

I also have been experiencing a bit of depression regarding the permanence of the surgery. I'm 12 days post op, still on Clear Liquids, and in that time I've thrown birthday parties for both my children and celebrated my own, been surrounded by food and even though I'm not physically hungry, I was really really sad feeling like I would never be able to eat anything tasty again. But then I remind myself that it's all in my head. My body isn't telling me I should eat it, it's just my instinct leftover from being a food addict. So I have to keep reminding myself that I asked for this surgery, I needed this surgery, and try to look at it as an exercise in patience and discipline (which are not my strong points, lol). I trust it will get easier for both you and me.

And I would definitely clarify the ibuprofen instruction with your doctor, that's generally not something bariatric patients are supposed to take.

Best of luck to you moving forward!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
