Exercise after surgery

Recommended Posts

I have not had surgery, it's a ways down the road but I currently hate exercise.

After you had your surgery and if you did start exercising was it more because you had a boost to your ego and just felt better about yourself or was it the fact that you were just more comfortable and able to do more or a little bit of both?

I'm hoping I'll start to be more apt to exercise once I see results.

In my experience it was a mixture of boost in ego and energy. I felt so energized and good solely because of the fact that I knew I got the surgery done. 4 days post OP and I was walking around 4 miles without any of my previous ankle pain. Working out was always hell for me because my joints would HURT and I'd get so dizzy. When I started doing more (3 weeks probably) I was able to work out at ease and felt normal about it I didn't feel like I was going to have a heart attack after only a few minutes. I'm 20 so my experiences could be because of my age and current weight around that time (290-270) but working out will get easier quicker than you think.

I never really minded exercising, I'd go for walks before surgery if the weather was okay enough. I went to a gym once a week for a few months. It gave me energy and I'd always feel good about myself after I left. I wasn't limited on movement at all back then, I was just lazy. Still kinda am. I'm active 3 days out of the week.

I exercise for my health both physical and mental. It strengthens my body and gives me more energy. It helps my body to heal and handle stress. It tones my muscles and keeps me strong. Post surgery I walked as much as I could until I lost about 50 pounds then I started light weights and trampoline work out. I still walk the dog every day and hike on weekend. Exercise has helped me with maintenance and having a healthy metabolism.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
