How did you choose your goal weight?

I originally thought I wanted to get to 150, but I revised my goal to 160 when I realized my size 8 jeans were already feeling a little loose at 168. I think a size 6 looks good on my frame and any lower would be a little small. In the end I guess my body will decide.

It's a great question! My docs don't ask for a goal weight, but mine has always been 120 lbs. Last time I lost a large amount of weight, I got down to 145. I was a size 14 and still had a good amount of fat. I also have a small frame, so I was estimating 120 would be good for me. That would be a 20 BMI. We will see what I feel like when I'm closer!

I never had any goal weight set for me. But I weighed 135#'s when I married my hubby at 17YO. Then I got really sick for a long time and I dropped down to 135#'s. I looked sick! Maybe because I was so sick!! LOL So after my RNY I lost very fast. My lowest weight was 117#'s ( I am 5.4) But I did gain 8#'s back. Even my Surgeon was worried about my weight. Am I happy about gaining that weight back? NOPE, but I am so much lighter than I was 4 years ago. I have my life back!! I can enjoy my grandkids walk ride my bike you name it LIFE IS GREAT!! BTW I now weigh 125#'s which is the lowest weight Ever. I don't remember anything about my weight growing up in HS I weighed 135. So I really believed that 135 is my set point. LOL Research everything t help you with your decision Good Luck

I was 174.6 kg on the day of my first interview with the surgeon and dietitian.

I set my goal at 74.6kg for two reasons:

(A) it's exactly 100 kilograms to lose. In Australia, we measure weight/mass in kilograms. So, all my "percentage lost" and "percentage to go" calculations will be super easy to see/calculate.

(B) 74.6kg is also over BMI 24 and below BMI 25 ... very convenient number!

I didn't setup a goal, my surgeon just told me, "This is the weight I would like you at." No fuss, no mess. LOL. Look up on the BMI scale and see where you "should" be. You should be happy with where you end up (your goal). Don't listen to others when they tell you that you have lost too much weight or that you need to eat more or that this whole 7 layer chocolate cake won't hurt you. Most of all I would recommend talking to your surgeon or your primary doctor as to where you should be. Good luck to you, even though the weight loss journey is yours, don't forget that you will always have support here with us (your WLS family).

THIS. The last time I lost 130 pounds I got to 145 and people kept telling me I was too skinny. I was still in a size 14! I know it sounds stupid, but I let it mess with my head and I gained back all of it plus 60 pounds. Never let people tell you you're too skinny. Man that really pisses me off.

This is happening to me now. I have had two people tell me to ignore the BMI charts because I am definitely too skinny even though I haven't quite reached a healthy weight yet.

I am just not listening to them. When my body is ready I will stop losing. I will be the judge of how small is too small.

Right now I am using the higher end of a "normal" range BMI.

It may be too low, but if it is, it's not by much. It also may be too high because I picked that number based on what I weighed when I was in my early 20s.

Truthfully I plan to reassess at 200 pounds.

My surgeon office only expects wls patients to lose 60-75% of their excess weight. I guess those are the typical results and they don't think getting back to high school weight is a realistic goal, even if some people do get there. When I asked they said 175 seemed like a good number for me. I would still have an overweight BMI at that number.

I haven't reached goal yet but when I do I plan to Celebrate and set the second goal of a healthy BMI - 160.

I initially thought I'd love to get to 180 but when I checked the BMI charts that was still obese so I decided on 174 which puts me at overweight. I will reassess once I get lower and see how I look/feel.

I had my 6 month check up Tuesday. Doctor said I had exceeded their goal. Their goal for me was 175-207. This was based on a percentage of excess body weight. I'm about 202 now. I personally am just aiming for below 200. I don't have to be super thin. I don't want to look sickly. I don't want to go below 190. I want to be out of the obese category. At 202 pounds I look really thin. Everyone guesses that I weigh around 170. They are shocked when l tell them my weight. I'm afraid I will look terrible any lower than 190.

I was banded in 09 when I was 22 and my goal was 125lbs because that was like in the middle for what was considered "normal" for my height. When I hit 149lbs I felt AMAZING and decided to stay right there. 150lbs was the top of the range but I was in a size 8 and felt great.

I'm now looking into sleeve revision surgery and am keeping my goal around 145-150 still.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
