Non supportive support system

Recommended Posts

So....I'm new to the group. Will finish my insurance mandated diet October 18th and will schedule ds surgery for November. I've been working for months with doctors and have informed my family of the plans. Now that it's getting closer to the date they're all starting to say things like...."why not just eat healthier?" Or "are you sure you can go your whole life eating like that?"
Anyone else have similar issues? How can I get them to see this is necessary for me to live a happier, healthier life?

I definitely had this problem. I even wrote a post on it when i first joined this group awhile back. The first thing you have to do is get people out of your business. If you don't want them to comment, simply don't tell them what you're doing.

Because reality is you're going to have to eat better and exercise anyway so don't tell anyone anf get the credit for that. Those people are now going assume you're taking the easy way out, when you aren't.

My dad was like that and i literally didn't tell him until the day before. And that entire day he tried to talk me out of it, the idea of surgery scared him. I understood that, but i couldn't get him to understand why i was still making my choice so did what i wanted.

You will find support through these groups and also through workout classes and so on. You'll meet new people that will have no clue you had weight loss surgery, they just see you trying to be healthy and it will help a lot.

Stay positive and stay focused.

Im sorry you are experiencing this. I can't say I know how it feels like on the account of not caring about anyone's opinion other than my mum. So I didn't tell anyone. I'm happy I did that. Because I needed to be sure my fears were my own not what I've heard. Me and my mum talked through all this together and loved ones watching us go through this is scary for them too. But also you get the people who don't want you to change you never know someones motives.. I focused on what was best for me and because I know my mums motives was 100% focused on my health and the fact she knows me inside out. After the surgery we both were like shocked she didn't try to talk me out of it. Even though I'm an adult she is one person who if she said dont do this. I wouldn't have. So I'm glad she supported me. If you chose to tell other people which many people are comfortable doing and there is nothing wrong with that.. You have to be prepared that people are under the assumption that you must of told them to get their opinion lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
