Hi guys,

This is my first entry. I am having my band removed and hopefully rny in the same procedure. I was warned that some people require two surgeries depending on the condition of your stomach. Can anyone share their experiences related to this topic? Thanks, it's nice to not feel so Lone in this journey.

Oh wow that stinks. I'm not a candidate for the sleeve because I have gerd and esophagitis. My doctor did say there are times sleeve patients end up having bypass surgery later on. Fingers crossed he can do the bypass next week. Good:) luck to you.

In my experience it's relatively rare for a patient to not be able to get the bypass done and band removal all in one shot unless other factors are in play (ie major abdominal trauma, major surgery like emergency splenectomy colon resections etc).

The only thing I could think of is if the band was severely eroded or something. But band removals and bypasses are pretty frequent where I work we probably do like 3 a week or so and it's very rare for them to not be able to do it.

Whether insurance pays for both in one shot is different or makes you wait but that's a different story

The surgery definitely takes a bit longer though. I'd say instead of 2-2.5 hours you're looking at 3-4 but this depends on how things look Inside

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
