Are protein shakes a meal or a drink?

Recommended Posts

Hey so I'm three weeks post op and haven't really used shakes (my nurse didn't really encourage them) but now I have to use them to get enough Protein in anyway you know you have to stop drinking 30 minutes before a meal? Do you have to do that with Protein Shakes? Or do they count as a drink? Thanks! 😘

I count them as a meal, so I try not to drink any Water 15 minutes before a shake and at least 30-45 minutes after finishing one.

My nutritionist also counts them as a meal and we had to follow the "no Water 30 min before/after" rule. Since they were a meal we weren't supposed to drink a whole shake in a sitting but split it up 2oz every 2 hours and drink water in between. Your nutritionist may have a different way of doing things. Hope that helps!

I didn't count them as meal that early out. It is too hard to get your fluids in and they are just a liquid. It isn't like they sit on your stomach anyway. Never followed the 30 minutes before and after with them, and was never told to. They are liquids, not meals for my program.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
