Tomorrow I am cleared to eat anything. What veggies did you eat first?

Recommended Posts

Cruciferious veggies like cauliflower and broccoli took me most of a year to be able to tolerate even cooked. I still struggle with raw carrots but cooked are fine (I'm four years out). Strangely though lettuce was never difficult. Had it starting at six weeks out.

I needed Protein Shake to meet my goal for about sixteen or eighteen months and still have one several days a week.

Thanks for your input! I would love some salad but I will probably wait a few weeks. I hope at some point broccoli and cauliflower and raw carrots sit well with me.

I've been lucky, I'm 3 months now and having no problems with anything so far except early on with egg

That is awesome! I haven't had any problems yet except I had to drink vegan Protein Shakes to avoid nausea.

I have eaten lots of zucchini, cooked with a few drops of olive oil. Mainly because my friends are gardeners and it's September.....
But it tastes good to me with garlic and seems to work well with various Proteins. I had marinated fresh green Beans and that was a big mistake. Start soft, whatever you choose.

Zucchini sounds great! I was maybe going to sauté some spiralized zucchini. Thanks :)

I am 4 years out and please tell me WHAT is a vegetable. LOL I still can't eat veggies with my Protein. After my protein, I don't have much room. LOL If I want veggies I have to do what I call a veggie dinner. Now I'm not saying for anyone to do this but...with all of the fresh veggies out there I will have sliced tomatoes, green Beans that's all I can do. Oh yes once this Summer I had a half of an ear of corn. MMM so good

I miss veggies so much already. I really hope to find a way to integrate them into my meals. I am not a big meat eater so I really don't want to lose my veggies. Sliced tomatoes sound yummy!

My surgeon orders Protein Shakes for two weeks only, then never again. Thank goodness, I HATE them! I guess my first veggie was mashed potatoes and god they were glorious! I couldn't eat raw veggies for 7 weeks, so I just had a lot of cooked veggies and fruit. I found out quickly that broccoli wasn't my friend. Now around 7 months out I can have a little bit if I chew it very well.
I think it's important to add veggies so every meal, so I would cook spinach into things, cooked carrots, tomatoes, etc.

Thanks! That's a great idea to add veggies in!

Im 4 weeks out as of Thursday and I have been able to tolerate lettuce, pickles, olives, tomatoes and green Beans with ease.
I have really come to like pickles and I was not a pickle eater before. bread and butter are my favorite, then the straight up Dill.

Wow! That is good to hear! I'm glad you are doing so well with those. I really am craving lettuce but was nervous to try. Now I am excited to try soon.

If you're measuring carbs or sugar, watch the bread and butter pickles. Loaded with massive amounts of sugar.
I am not sure how much in the store bought variety, but my dad makes them home made and I have witnessed the pounds of sugar going into a batch first hand.

It's interesting you posted this! I am six weeks out and I've been eating cauliflower wlith no problems. I haven't had Beans or broccoli...my doctor told me to avoid them because of gas issues. I am not allowed to have any raw veggies until 3 months out so I still have time before I try lettuce. I love reading the posts on here to see how people's doctors and personal experiences differ!

Tomorrow I will be 4 weeks out and can eat whatever I am able to. What were you eating at 4 weeks? Are there veggies that are easier to tolerate? When did you start eating lettuce? Raw veggies? When did you start tolerate quinoa and grains? My Dr is pretty sold on very low carbs and limited plant based Proteins so they want patients to focus on animal Proteins. How long did you take Protein Shakes? Sorry for so many questions. I really want to be plant based and am craving veggies. Thanks!!

My doctor is advising low carbs too! I'm six weeks out and still not allowed to eat any raw veggies or fruits. I really miss having a salad. I wonder if it's because it fills you up and doesn't have much nutritional value??? I have been able to eat cauliflower, green Beans, peas, but everything needs to be cooked until it's soft or canned. The canned veggies are awful :) Just not what I'm used to, I guess. I had a small piece of eggplant parm and it was great!

Everyone's doctor is so different and everyone seems to tolerate different things. My doctor has advised no beans or broccoli for 3 months after surgery because they cause gas which can be very uncomfortable. Other people have posted that they have no problems with those! I think the best thing is try a small amount and see how you feel after it. You may have a very different experience than another person. They always say to introduce one new thing at a time...and I would recommend just having a few bites. It's a learning game for all of us :)

Thanks! It is really surprising how different Dr instructions are! I was allowed to have refried beans at 2 weeks and whole beans at 3 weeks. I have not had any problems with beans. I'm not as crazy about canned veggies as much as fresh ones. Definitely a learning curve

I don't remember when I actually started more veggies, but it was early on. I was cleared for all foods about 3-4 weeks. Up until that time, my nut approved of my "green bombs" in Protein Shakes, which were ice cubes sized blended green veggies and fruits, that were blended in to my drinks. So technically, I had veggies from the get go. Didn't bother me at all. Now I do recall having salad early on, didn't bother me either.

I've learned the more you eat beans the better your tolerance. I eat them all the time and don't have issues with gas. Kind of the same but off topic, peanut tolerance...there was a study done that if you start your kids early on with peanuts during infancy (obviously a safe way to introduce it), those kids have built a tolerance of them. It's all very interesting actually.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
