I only have to do 3 months of weight ins. My first consult was 7/25, second visit was 8/21, third will be 9/18 , why am I being told surgery won't be until November? And that I would have to have another visit in October too?

I assume an insurance company is paying for your surgery.

After the third weigh-in, the office staff at the bariatric surgery practice submits your paperwork to the insurance company for approval.

Not all insurance companies grant lightning-fast approval. It takes time, perhaps a few weeks to a couple of months.

Most surgeons have a policy that you must be seen for an office visit within 30 days of the surgery date, which is the probable reason you must report to them for an October weigh-in.

I was done with my entire process in June and didn't have surgery until August. My information had to be submitted to insurance (which took about two weeks to submit) and then I was scheduled for the beginning of August.

My initial consult didn't count as a "weigh in visit" so my 6 months required by insurance won't start until next week at my first nutritionist visit. She told me that my surgery was likely 7 months out from that day we met (8/17).

Agree with above post. They want three months not three weigh ins. So your first "month" was 7/25-8/21. Second month 8/21-9/18 and third month will 9/18-10/xx. After that insurance approval can take up to 2-3 weeks depending on backlog of your insurances precertification department. Hope this helps...FYI 24 years working for a major insurance company.

Yup for aetna we had to do 90 days but that was really 4 appt-the fourth appt had to be after day 90-i had my fourth on day 91-otherwise they would have denied my request. Dont know why its just how it had to be.

My preop experience has been almost identical. First consult appointment was 7/20, nut appointments in Aug, Sept and last will be 10/24 and I will get my surgery date then! Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
