Has anyone's surgeon given them a calorie goal? I can hit 500-600. Is that too much? I am still on a full liquid diet and really enjoy the Tomato Soup. I usually have 2 cups throughout the day and 1 Premier Protein shake. I get to 45 carbs a day.

500-600 calories a couple months post- op is good. I can't tell how far out you are though.

I was never given a calorie goal, nor was I instructed to count calories. I am 2.5 years out, reached my goal weight and have been maintaining nicely.

Here's the theory...we are not on just another diet, and the practice of counting calories somewhat feeds into that dieters' mentality.

As long as you eat real food (lean Protein, non-starchy veggies, non-starchy fruits) you should have nothing to worry about. It's the processed junk such as chips, crackers and Cookies that promote weight regain. If you wish to re-introduce these into your diet, you'll need to track your calories.

My hospital's "active weight loss" requirements were less than 15 total carbs a day (not net - total), and 600 calories or less. You were encouraged to stay at that level until goal (or at least close to it). I didn't even come close to 600 for many months - but some people do.

I'm almost 3 years post op, under goal and maintaining for 1.5 years, and I eat anywhere from 800-1000 a day. 50 or less carbs a day, give or take. I monitor everything pretty loosely at this point, considering my habits and how much I run/lift.

So this! I don't count and my doc/nut never gave me numbers of caloric goals. They don't want us to be on another diet!!!

Find a healthy food choice lifestyle that's sustainable and stick to it.

Thank you so much for this. I follow the diet and get my target protein, but the bariatric app I use to log also counts calories and I was afraid I was taking in too many.

What are you drinking? For me the Tomato Soup increases my calories and carbs but it is on my list.

Thank you for posting this. I'm concerned about your long term caloric restriction. The accepted daily minimum consumption is 1200 calories, you are pretty tall, young, and active.. so you probably need even more than that.

Personally, from this list, I would have consumed the greek yogurt (plain), and Protein Shakes (if I could have stood them). The rest is pretty much trash. BUT, as long as you KNOW it's trash, and it's only temporary to get through this phase, then that's all right.

I don't care about calories during the first 8 weeks.. I care about meeting the Protein goals, and trying to learn how to read labels to tell which foods have the right nutrient "profile", and which ones don't.

For example, go to the yogurt section of your store. Some yogurts have, I don't know... 5g of protein and 40g carbohydrate. Totally unacceptable! Another yogurt has 13g protein and 10g carbs.. that one I'd put in my cart.

It takes time and work. But, doesn't everything that's worth doing?

The calories are fine. Make sure you're hitting your Protein goals. (The shake might have 30g, but the Soup only has about 18 g, if made with 2 cups milk).

It is just that I never feel full during this full liquid phase. So, I have been consuming too much of these things. I hope once I can move on to dense Proteins, chicken breasts and lean meats I will feel satisfied.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
