Hi I quit smoking 3 weeks ago and I slipped up in an emotional moment. I have since smoke a 6 cigarette s in a week. I have the pre surgery testing Oct 2 and my surgery is Oct 20. Anyone know how I can get rid of the nicotine in my system in 3 weeks time? I'm so upset at myself I had my last cigarette yesterday today no urges or cravings it was just a rough week when I slipped. I was never a heavy smoker maybe a 1/ 2 pack a day before I stopped. Anyone with any advise to help me rid my body of nicotine in time for my testing?

I slipped up, too, preop. I didn't worry about the nicotine in my system so much as just not smoking. The doctors didn't ask nor did they do any tests to dermine my nicotine levels. I am glad however that I quit. Ever since the surgery, I have NOT had one urge. I feel free. Hang in there.

I looked it up and nicotine comes out of your system in 1 to 3 days... so if you don't smoke anymore you should be fine.

Try for no more slip ups and you should be fine, I too caved at 3 weeks prior and by the time they tested I was clear. Make sure you're getting your Water in as well

I stopped smoking in July for surgery. I slipped up in Aug the 5th to be exact. I took my labs by the 10th and was fine. Lots of Water, Cranberry juice and biting my fingernails. The tests came back just fine. I also got a prescription of Nicoret Gum to help with smoking cessation and still passed.
I've slipped once or twice since and have started my quitting once again. This time it's been much easier. My Surgeon wants me nicotine free 30 days before surgery and I'm afraid to be tested again and have my surgery scheduled later (Nov) because of a cigarette.
So far so good!
I should be scheduled for mid-to late October.
Good luck with quitting it's harder than most people think.

Quitting is very difficult. After having surgery I have NOT had urges. I'm grateful because I was afraid I wouldn't stay quit.

Well I caved again and over the weekend had 2 cigs. I'm doomed. My pre operative testing is Oct 6. My surgeon never said anything about smoking I did fill out the form that I was a casual smoker. But from reading everything online its better to quit before and I want to be in good shape for the surgery. Who is the one that makes the decisions about the patient being nicotine free? Today I will keep drinking my Water and see if I can get a gallon down maybe flush it all out by Oct 6?

Mine said they would test and I got tested on when my EEG was done on Thursday. The big risk is nicotine can cause leaks at your incision and delays the healing process. I was an Ecig user since I quit smoking 8 years ago. The whole "stomach leaking thing" freaked me out.

Good luck and stay strong!!

I dont think most surgeons test for smoking, I know ive never heard of it done at my hospital although im sure some actually do. But its not about cheating your test, its really about your health. Ive personally seen severe complications from smoking and bariatric surgery and its not pretty. You could seriously ruin your life, kill yourself or worse. Leaks, DVTs, and ulcers are all real and smoking drastically increases the risk. Not just the risk during and immediately after, but smoking ever again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
