Low Blood Pressure Post-Op? Anyone?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost two weeks post-op and went grocery (well, Protein Drink, mostly) shopping today. I thought I would keel over in the store. So weak . . . one possibility that occurred to me was that my blood pressure was too low--I've been on meds for high BP for years, but my BP at doctors' visits since this journey started have all been quite low. I'm wondering if I should cut back on my meds and if anyone else has had experience with this that they'd share. Thanks!!

I've never been on blood pressure meds. at 260 my blood pressure was around 115/80. Now post op my new normal is 85-90/55-60.

very common to have a drop in blood pressure, so you should go to your doctor and see about reducing your meds.

Please talk to your Dr about reducing or ending your medicine. It needs to be monitored carefully. I'm surprised they still have you on meds for it.

Yes. Ditto the other respondents.

See your doctor for a review ASAP ... sooner rather than later.

My cardiologist took me off of my BP medications yesterday. My BP was 90+ over 60+. Also have your cholesterol levels checked if you are in a statin. Mine dropped to 86 total cholesterol.

Obviously never decide to cut your meds your self, speak to your dr. But this was the case for me , my blood preasure was high and was put on an extra high dose a week before surgery to not have it canceled due to being to high) not my surgeon my usual doctor) 2 weeks after surgery i was getting dizzy my preasure was low, the tablets were stopped then i go to see them to check it , so far so good almost 10 weeks.

Give a call to your doctor. If you can find a place to test your blood pressure, like at those machines in the grocery stores or Walmart, great! That will help you know what is going on. If you test it and it's low or normal, tell your doc, and they'll probably agree that you can decrease or cut out the meds.

I stopped my meds the day of surgery. My pressure still isn't normal (runs about 135/85), but it's below the level to be medicated (generally that line is around 145/90).

While in store you can always ask the pharmacist to check your BP for free or get a Bp machine at your local pharmacy. My blood pressure was normal before surgery but I'm assuming the anesthetics caused it to explode so they sent me home from the hospital with a prescription for lisiniopril(sp?) and gave me guidelines... About 4 days post op my BP dropped back to normal and I haven't had to take it since. Definitely consult with your surgeon or the prescribing Dr before changing your meds but get it taken care of quickly as blood pressure is nothing to mess with! Hope this helps💕😊😊

Prior to surgery, I was on two types of prescription medicine to control my high blood pressure. I had been on the meds for several years. I tested my blood pressure each day and tracked it. After surgery I noticed that my blood pressure was dropping so I reduced my meds and then at the end of 2 weeks I went completely off my meds for this condition. My high blood pressure went into remission and has remained there. I am over 4 years post op RNY gastric bypass surgery.

So consult your doctor about reducing you medicine. The only reason why I did it on my own was because I tracked my blood pressure daily and I felt confident in making that decision myself.

I had the same issue when I had surgery several years ago. I ended up going off my blood pressure med entirely and have had good books ever since.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
