casey5 5 Posted September 8, 2017 I am 3 1/2 weeks post op and have been nothing but sick for the past week. I had an endoscopy done today and learned I had stricture (the hole between the pouch and the intestines is too small) and an ulcer where the sutures were. Has anyone else had this problem? They were able to open up the hole a little but will need to repeat it in 3 weeks. They gave me medicine for the ulcer and bumped me back down to a liquid diet. Quite honestly I'm having serious buyers remorse. All this pain and misery is hardly worth the lousy 15 pounds that I have lost. I'd rather be fat and be able to chew food and take a drink of something and not feel nauseous. Seriously wondering why I did this to myself.
James Marusek 5,244 Posted September 8, 2017 According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present. So the general advice from above if I am interpreting it properly is to eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed. Also avoid NSAIDs (such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Naproxen, Meloxicam, Celecoxib, Indomethacin, Ketorolac, Ketoprofen, Nimesulide, Piroxicam, Etoricoxib, Mefenamic acid, Carprofen, Aspirin/paracetamol/caffeine, Etodolac, Loxoprofen, Nabumetone, Flurbiprofen, Salicylic acid, Aceclofenac, Sulindac, Phenylbutazone, Dexketoprofen, Lornoxicam, Tenoxicam, Diflunisal, Diclofenac/Misoprostol, Flunixin, Benzydamine, Valdecoxib, Oxaprozin, Nepafenac, Etofenamate, Ethenzamide, Naproxen sodium, Dexibuprofen, Diclofenac sodium, Bromfenac, Diclofenac potassium, Fenoprofen, Tolfenamic acid, Tolmetin, Tiaprofenic acid, Lumiracoxib, Phenazone, Salsalate, Felbinac, Hydrocodone/ibuprofen, Fenbufen]. Most forms of Excedrin contains aspirin. Use proton pump inhibitors [Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, Esomeprazole, Lansoprazole, Rabeprazole, Dexlansoprazole, Rabeprazole sodium, Pantoprazole sodium, Esomeprazole magnesium, Omeprazole magnesium, Naproxen/Esomeprazole, Esomeprazole sodium, Omeprazole/Bicarbonate ion] and/or sucralfate [Carafate] antacid. And have yourself tested for Helicobacter pylori infection.
Monasmle 90 Posted September 8, 2017 I'm sorry for all the issues you're having. I had no issues with my surgery and still felt buyers remorse. I mourned losing the comfort food gave. But 5 months out I have no regrets. 87lbs down and it has all been completely worth it. Hang in there, besides the medical issues you're having, your body is going through a lot of internal changes, on almost no calories. I know it doesn't make you feel any better, but you can get through this. HW 310 SW 299 CW 267 2 mommachristyx3 and FluffyChix reacted to this

izzy2246 0 Posted October 30, 2017 I completely understand what you’re going through. I am in the same boat right now. I’m 4 weeks out and doctor put me on meds and told me to stay on liquids for 2 weeks. I feel sick every single day with shakes and even just Water. I feel like I made a major mistake. Good luck to you! I really hope it gets better from here.
Adventurousanimal 2 Posted February 27, 2018 Hey Casey5, the same thing is happening to me! They went in to dilate the stricture and found an ulcer. Now I'm on a feeding tube for 3 weeks while it heals. Can you update us on what happened with you? I'm so afraid I will need revision surgery. I look forward to hearing your story. Hoping your feeling much better at this point.
