What Pain Meds did you get while in hospital/surgery center

Recommended Posts

Hi again, my deal will be outpatient. I go in one week from today at 5am then I go home sometime towards the end of day. I am curious what pain meds were you given while at the facility? Where they via an IV? I'm having a hiatal hernia surgery at same time and I'm not very tough. I'm worried about them controlling the pain?!

Usually it's liquid oxycodone but I tend to vomit that up so they gave me Dilaudid, I did call on day 4 and ask for Hydrocodone as it was too strong and made me loopy.

I am just surprised it's an outpatient surgery. I stayed 2 nights in the hospital.

I'm not crazy about it being out patient. But every one is except gastric bypass with these doctors.

I was given Dilaudid by IV along with anti-nausea meds every 4 hours the pain relief lasted about 3-3.5 hours and i usually rocked myself with a pillow though the rest of the time until it was time for the next round and when the relief would kick in after i my next dose i walked to help the gas. when i was released i was then given a rx script for oral Dilaudid (i had my other meds already picked up before surgery like my blood clot prevention injections, anti nausea meds, and nexium) that i used i had more pain then usual as i have 4 herniated discs and something happened with the way i laid the time i was in the hospital and i had severe back pain so i was on Dilaudid for 2 weeks.

I stayed over night and was released by late afternoon the next day i could have stayed another night but i wanted to be in my own home and in my own bed.

I had Dilaudid by IV for the first 4 -6 hours. After I had the leak test and was given the OK to start drinking I was switched to Oxy. They recommended Oxy due to the small size of the pill. It worked for me.

If the doctors are reputable, they will make sure you have enough meds for at home care. It was helpful to have the prescription in advance so my husband could have it filled before picking me up. One less stop on the way home.

I was outpatient too for my band to SIPS DS revision. I remember them giving me a pain med to drink that I immediately puked back up. Other than that I have no recollection of what meds I had before I was fully alert. I started walking around the halls as soon as I got my legs steady and didn't stop walking and sipping until I was released a few hours later. They gave me liquid oxycodone to go home with.

I was given hydrocodone for my gastric sleeve and spent 1 night in the hospital. I honestly enjoyed my hospital stay the nurses were very friendly and kept me entertained and walked around the hospital floor with me as I couldn't sleep. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Good luck with everything!

Thank you for mentioning this! IV Tylenol was amazing!! Everyone should ask for this as part of their pain management.

Ten months out. In the hospital I was given a morphine drip--overnight stay. They sent me home with hydrocodone, and I took it for the entire two weeks after. I normally do not take narcotics, even for serious dental work Tylenol does the trick. However, I needed this pain killer. After the two weeks, I didn't have so much pain, but didn't feel well. At six weeks, I felt better than I had felt in YEARS!!!!!

I left with 30 Diluadids. I never took one. I dropped them off at my local police station last Saturday.

I was shocked how amazing it was! Oral Tylenol does little for me so I didn't expect much... WOW and no nausea which I get from narcotics. Trouble is it's really expensive for some reason

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
