You need to eat that slowly, or you'll be sick. And after you eat, you'll be too full to drink, honestly. These things sound crazy now, but they're second nature post op. They're rules, but they're also your BODY'S RULES.

For me, after eating my ~4oz meal, I am so stuffed that even the idea of drinking something makes me feel terrible. Even just a sip. I need that time to digest before I start putting fluids in my body...

everyone is different. These rules were designed for the average patient and if you follow them you will more than likely avoid issues.

Some people can eat a little faster without issues. I have found it depends on what I am eating. Yogurt- 5 minutes and done no problem. salad or dense Protein must slow down and chew thoroughly or I will feel pain in my chest after eating. I will occasionally drink a sip of Water halfway through a meal, but just a sip. The problem with drinking and eating is that it will cause the food to pass through your stomach faster and you could overeat. It is better to just not do it unless you really have to.

But I don't feel sick and have no issues with drinking after I eat. I was a flight attendant for 15 years and always ate in a rush so slowing down is very difficult. 2 oz is like 4 bites 1 bite every 5 min. I just find it impossible.

I mean, you had surgery to help you, to provide you with tools to change your life. The question now is, are you going to change your life? You need to slow down, whether it's "very difficult" or not...

@pumpedandready

I never ate slowly and I have lost over 180 pounds.

I hate cold food. I usually eat in 10 minutes or less.

If you have weighed your food, eating your proper portion fast is not going to make you sick because you are not over eating.

As long as you are weighing your food prior and not over eating there is no harm in eating fast. Ideally you should eat slowly but that just isn't a reality for everyone. If my food gets cold or even lukewarm, I won't eat it, so I eat faster than most people.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
