Please advise me on a vitamin that won't make me ill

Recommended Posts

I'm 20 days post op. Prior to surgery, I took One a Day gummies every day. My surgeon only recommends bariatric Vitamins so I spent $60 on Multivitamins, Calcium, and Biotin. I ordered Celebrate brand and cannot keep the Multivitamin down. It doesn't matter if I take them AM, PM, stomach empty or full, they make me vomit. I read that for those who are made sick by these vitamins, Bariatric Advantage is the same.

Out of desperation, I bought Flintstone vitamins and had the same reaction (TBH Flintstones taste exactly the same as Celebrate) but thankfully didn't get as sick, probably because Flintstones are much smaller. I took the samples I had of Celebrate from my surgeon before opening what I ordered, so hopefully, I can send them back for a refund.

I'm scared to take the Calcium and biotin now. Has anyone had a bad reaction to those? Can you recommend a good bari Vitamin that's not Celebrate or BA brand? I'm not sure why these types of vitamins make me sick; I read elsewhere that it may have to do with the iodine in them. I have an appointment with my surgeon tomorrow but I would really like y'alls opinion in case his advice is to just keep taking them.

My suregon didn't want me taking Calcium or Biotin until 45 days post surgery for shine reason. I had trouble with Multivitamins as well, the chewible Bariatric Fusion multivitamins I was taking tasted horrible to me for awhile but i was able to tolerate Flintstones so-so which my suregon also recommended until my tastes went back to normal about 6 weeks post. I just had to force myself but doesn't make it any easier. I hear they make liquid vitamins- maybe that would help ??

I'm ultra sensitive to nausea from Vitamins and have had no issues with the natrol brand Biotin and with some bariatric brand Calcium chew (was given a ton of samples). I also do really well with the vitafusion women's gummies from costco. I don't know if we are supposed to have gummies but I just let them melt and macerate them in my mouth. They taste good too. The flinstone ones have that chalky taste and I can't stomach them at all. Done well with the gummies! :)

I had this same problem as well and what worked for me was the PatchMD multi vitamin patches that they sell on this website. No sick feeling and my blood work looked amazing for the first time in years! I highly recommend!

Many chewable vitamins contain sugar alcohols, which are artificial sweeteners that end in "itol" (e.g. xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol). After WLS, these types of Vitamins make me nauseous and/or vomit. I can't tolerate sugar alcohols in other products either.

Have you tried crushing Vitamins into powder? I'm sorry this is happening to you. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
