What is the reason for not drinking while eating?

Because you will fill up to much. Your stomach is the size of a banana so drinking will fill you up and no room for the food

I was told that it pushes the food through more quickly and will cause hunger sooner.
At the start our stomachs are the size of a straw and will stretch and heal to the size of a banana.

This is also what I was told.

I've heard all of those reasons. For me, having taken a drink too early by mistake, it made me sick. It almost immediately came back up. So, I think to pause after eating is also about avoiding the discomfort.

I saw my nutritionist today, and the info they give is that some people can tolerate taking small sips as they eat, others can't. So you could try it.

If you were to watch what is happening in your stomach and you have no food in it, you would see that when you drink something it goes right through -it does not stay in the stomach. So if you drink something with a little bit of food in it, it pushes the food through your stomach quickly and into your intestines, allowing you to eat more and sooner than you should. If you already have a lot of food in your stomach and you drink soon after eating, it fills up the space making it uncomfortable long before it starts pushing food through. A couple of sips here and there will be fine.

This is the one rule I've managed to stick 99% of the time. I think it does all of the above: it pushes food through, fills you up quickly, and might stretch out a pouch. I find that it helps me space out my eating, it has become a habit now.

See, I was told that it would push food through faster and I would get hungrier faster, but frankly, I've had no problem drinking within 30 minutes before eating (no difference in fullness), and I can't drink for a full hour after eating out of sheer discomfort with how the Water feels over my full stomach! Weird.

I (usually) stop drinking 15 min before food and try and last the 30 min post food. Occasionally I take tiny sips. Like others, food then drink too soon can make me on the verge of vomit. Same with not fully sitting up while I eat.

We become complex creatures!

I sometimes just suck on an ice cube if I really feel like I need a sip

You can drink before eating without problems. The Water goes passed the pyloric valve no problem, so isn't in your stomach.

But after and during is a no go, you won't be able to eat the food you need if drinking while eating.

You also run the risk of vomiting if you take on too much liquid while eating and after eating.

I drink a lot before, wait two min. I will eat and take a very small sip to wet my mouth and always wait an hour after eating to resume liquids.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
