Does the Acid Reflux get worse over time?

Recommended Posts

Does the acid reflux get worse over time? I am starting to get empty stomach acid reflux now.

Lap band 9 years. Gallbladder removed 3.5 years ago. Last year started having more issues with needing to hurl (sorry!) - checked everything out, no slippage, yes a hernia, some esophagus inflammation - doctor wanted to remove the lap bad because she does soooo many removals and hates them. I refused so she said to increase my Protein. I have and hardly have the need to hurl any more. It does happen but not often.

I could lose more weight but..I'm scared to do another surgery and worried they won't if I do have the band removed since I'm now 170 at 5'4 (I think that puts me in the over weight category not obese). I guess the push would be knowing if the acid reflux does get worse over time and I should remove it - not because my doctor hates it.

Unfortunately, acid reflux can worsen and cause changes to the cells in your throat (i.e. Barrett's esophagus), which is associated with an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer.

Hi, I have had the same issues and I notice that my diet makes a big difference. If I stick to a very low carb high Protein diet I rarely have any problems with my band. Once I introduce to many carbs especially sugarary foods.or things like soda or alcohol my stomach flares and the reflux returns. It is impossible to be perfect so it does happen from time to time. I think these things may cause reflux with or without the band but it would take place lower in the stomach and may not be as problematic. Try monitoring your diet to see if it helps. Do some reading on foods that cause inflammation in the body and see if avoiding them helps over time.

I also try to stick to liquids for a day or two after I had reflux or a bad episode with heaving to give my stomach a chance to calm down.

I was banded in 2009 and have not had a change in fill since 2011. I am not willing to give up my band. I lost 120 lbs and have kept it off. I have two family members who both had bypass and both have gained their weight back. The surgery is just a tool if we don't change our attitude towards food no surgery works.

I to was banded in 09 with no problems until this summer. Same as you same symptoms. Today I had an unfill of 6cc and a CT scan. I have a hh. I’m not sure what’s next but I’m thinking nothing good.

I was throwing up in my sleep just clear bitter liquid, diet does not help but tonight I feel so much better.

Good luck and don’t wait to long or it can get worse.

I was down to 130 for the past 7 years. I will get there again

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
