if my a1c is high will my doc still operate?

Recommended Posts

I am having a lot of trouble keeping my glucose levels down, it seems to be an on going problem, hence one of the reasons I'm getting the DS. I was wondering if anyone knows if it's high will he still do my surgery? 🙁

This is a question to ask your surgeon directly, as only he/she will be able to say. But certainly many bariatric patients are diabetics hoping to improve that condition (I'm one). On the other hand, my numbers were fairly well controlled--with a lot of insulin--before surgery. I'm currently taking about a third as much insulin as I was before surgery.

My dr told me he would not operate if it wasn't under 8.0....I worked hard for 3 months and got it down from 9.0 to 6.2....

My surgery was 8-28--I'm currently on full liquids and finding it rather tough. Yesterday I had about an ounce or so of yogurt and that helped a lot. I've been lucky in not having pain really at all. I have not been exercising as I should, either--hope to get out of the apartment today for a while.

I was taking 60 units of insulin in the morning and at bedtime, so a LOT. I'm now taking 20 or 30 units, depending on my readings--they've been very good so far. (This morning's blood glucose was 109.)

So hang on in there--this surgery will help with that devil diabetes.

My hubby had to get his A1C down to a 7 before they would do surgery on him. But with his 1st surgery, his Lap Band removed and a failed surgery to a RNY. That Surgeon never said anything about his Blood Sugars. So it really depends on who you are going to. They also wanted him to lose 15#'s. Which when he did get his BS under control his weigfht would go up and then when he had his weight going his BS went up. The poor guy couldn't win. He finally went to Mexico. This was in 2013 to 2016, Finally he had the Sleeve. It wasn't what he wanted but that is the one they could do.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
