Do I need a prescription for these? Are there any available over the counter?

There are some over the counter ones (omeprazole is one) but I wouldn't add it without consulting with your surgeon unless you went out of country and your surgeon is unavailable or something like that

I wonder why some docs aren't giving a prescription for the acid blocker? I had my surgery in Mexico and I was started on one the same day after I got back to my room. I was told to just buy the otc omeprazole when I got back to the states. It really does make a difference.

I am not sure.
He never said anything about an acid blocker.
I had my surgery here in the states and my surgeon has been doing bariatric surgery for close to 20 years.
I see him in a couple weeks, I will ask about it.

Don't wait! Call and ask now... you can talk to a medical assistant or nurse.

It can make a HUGE difference in that gnawing hunger sensation!

Yes don't wait. Call and ask if you can take something OTC and ask which one to buy. There is a lot of acid in our new stomachs and no reason for you to suffer with it.

You might be on to something.
These hunger pains are awful.

But what I am saying is they are likely acid pains mimicking hunger at this early date. It does for many of us. Do a Search and you will see it time and time again. I was one.

We don't get to be obese (most of us) by being good judges of hunger signals.

The reality of losing my drug of choice is setting in.
Food was my last drug I could abuse.
I gave up alcohol and drugs nearly 10 years ago, been sober ever since.
Food was something I could abuse and now it is gone.
It is a Friday evening, I worked a few rough days at work and I want my normal escape. I want pizza and wings and video games.
Those days are gone and it is hitting me hard.

I'm 5 weeks out as of Monday and it has gotten much better to deal with food cravings. When I was on liquid and purees it was so much harder. Now that I can go to a restaurant and order a side of crab salad and an avocado, my life has changed!!!! Last night I went to a party and had a small plate of super finely chopped chicken, chewed super slowly and felt great. When I was on liquids and purees I would dream of food. Now that I'm more healed and more options are available, it's been much easier. Hang in there! Grant it I still have to take tiny bites and chew chew chew but being able to have more options has helped so much!

Another Update.
I am six weeks out. I am down 37 pounds since surgery. Including pre op diet I am down 55 pounds. I was using my Hydro flask and using the straw and I honestly think it was making me hungry by putting air in my stomach. I ditched the straw and I swear I am not as hungry.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
