8 yrs post op but seriously need a buddy/support!!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, my name is Kristen, and I am in dire need of a support buddy! I am 8 yrs post op GB, and am almost to the weight I was pre op!! Yes, I admit to being a bad patient, stubborn, and my worst enemy when it comes to eating. I have some legit reasons to not be as active as I should be( 3 types of arthriris and fibromyalgia) but eating the way I do is dangerous. I need a buddy, someone who has struggled, maybe was a bad patient but then dug out from this hole and took control of their health. Can anyone help me? I would be very greatful!!

There are two phases to weight loss surgery - the Weight Loss Phase and the Maintenance phase. This is the approach I used in the Maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf It is common to have some limited weight gain after gastric bypass surgery. They call it a 20 pound bounce. The important thing is not let go beyond it. According to my nutritionist, meals should consist of equal parts of Protein, fats and carbs after the first couple years post-op. Snacks should be limited to primarily whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible.

Also do not expect to lose weight at a rate similar to right after surgery. There is no quick fix. Generally if you gained the additional weight over a couple years, then it may take a couple years of watching what you eat to get back down.

Hello! I need a buddy too! I am almost 2 years post op and have also gained back more than half my weight. I am beyond depressed and know I am my worst enemy. I am a overnight binge eater. I do fairly well during the day but when I go to sleep I wake up all through the night and eat. I am miserable and truly need support so I don't feel so alone.

Hi! Glad to read from you. It is so hard to relate to others who have been super sucessful from the start. They don't understand the depression and helpless feeling when you gain back so much weight. For me I am a snacker, but also eat regular portions of food or too much. So I eat as I did post op. Yep bad patient. Its all stress eating. Emotional eater. Be happy to keep in touch and share, lend support!

Thanks,

Kristen

I know exactly what you mean! I am very depressed and feel as though I am a failure. I had lost so much and had felt so great and here I am 2 months shy of being 2 year pre op and I am getting far to close to my pre op surgery.
What is bad is I know what to do I just can't seem to do it. I need to go back to the doctor for a follow up but I am ashamed so I haven't gone. But I know I need that support and honestly I need the tough love.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I know what to do, just can’t seem to do it. I’m depressed, absolutely no motivation or energy whatsoever. I’ve been going to therapy for years. Nothing is helping

Hi, happy to read from you! Yes, I went to see the surgeon for a fillow up last Friday. I was dreading it, even thoufh he has never made me feel bad for not losing weight. I felt ashamed and embarassed. And I told him so. He said you cannit let yourself get into the mindset of shame and guilt. You cannot fault yourself for having the same habits and mindset that you had pre op, just cause you had surgery. If it took 20 years of bad habits, lifestyle, and choices then hiw can you expect your mind to change just cause your anatomy has. It rings true for me! But it is sure a struggle, huh?

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
