I quit smoking cigarettes a week ago. On my initial consult with a surgeon in May, he told me to quit. I asked about the e-cigarette (vaping) and he told me it was fine, it's the cigarettes he worries about and cigarettes will show up way more nicotine on the breath test than an e-cig will. The nurse also told me they have a patient that vapes like a fiend and always has it in her mouth. The one thing I am wondering now is do any of you vape? If so, what nicotine level are you using? Mine is 18mg and I'm not sure if that's too high. I am currently waiting for my surgery date since I had my 3rd weight check 7 days ago on Friday so I'm waiting for my next appointment to ask my doctor in more depth.

I too just quit smoking it's been about a month now, I vape.. it's glued to me!!! I'm currently vaping 6mg. They do several different types of testing if it's proven that you're a "smoker" I've been told they do a urine test as well. Nicotine is nicotine though, my doctor said if I can get down to 0% nic level 3mo before surgery then we'll be good so that's what I'm working towards. Hope that helps a little

If I had your doctor then I'd have to be at 0mg by now. I wish my doctor told me but he didn't say anything about nicotine levels in the vape all he talked about was the fact it's better than a cigarette. I need to get more juice soon, maybe I'll tough it up and go straight down to 0mg.

Rocky80, you should stop drinking alcohol for at least 2 weeks before surgery. Leading up to surgery day you need to be shrinking your liver, alcohol doesn't help with that.

I was told no nicotine, including vaping and the patch etc and they tested for it preop. They didn't test me for alcohol. I didn't even know there was a test for it.

So do they test you for alcohol? Or just nicotine

I don't think they test for it. But I'm sure it'll be a harder surgery to perform if you have a fatty liver.

I don't think they test for alcohol but If u drink right after surgery you'll be in emergency room! Lol Wait at least 6 months the longer the better as it slows down weight loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
