Getting through the tough times

Recommended Posts

For the past week and this week, my WLS journey has been hard for me. I feel like I'm all alone. I miss eating what I want. I didn't eat a lot of things. I just miss the taste. I'm in the pureed stage now and I don't have a clue what to do. I feel like I'm never gonna get to my goal. I know it's only been 4 weeks post op for me. I'm always thinking of the future. I feel so restricted. Mind you I don't want to give up, I just want to know how did you all handle it? I'm mostly by myself so I don't have a spouse or friends and family that gets it. Most of my friends are overweight too. My family just says follow the plan. For me it's not that easy to follow the plan. Do I regret the surgery some days yes and others no. I have lost some weight, and I'm happy for that. I just want to know if there's any light after the tunnel. Also if anyone can help me with ideas for the pureed stage for someone like me who pretty much sucks at cooking. Please don't judge me, I'm only asking for support. Thank you all.

I am feeling the same way. I like ok at everyone eating and I miss just eating. I know I can eventually eat again I just can't wait for the puréed phase which is next week. I have been feeling kind of down lately crying and regretting this surgery some days. I know it's worth it an look toward to the future a lot. I know how you feel just hang in there and know it will all be worth it in the end.

Thank you so much for your support. I know I'm not alone, but I feel like I am. It's great having online support, I just wish sometimes I had that one on one support too. Some couples have gone through this journey together. They're very lucky.

I was told by my NUT (dietitian/nutritionist) that I could eat white fish and flaky fish like salmon during the puree stage, so if you like fish, it's easy to bake with a little lemon juice and salt. Just be careful to not overcook it, so it stays tender and breaks down easily in your mouth when you chew. I am also allowed cottage cheese. I can't stand the flavor of anything less than 4% milk-fat through, and I find that it stimulates my GERD, even with the PPI that I take. Your mileage may vary. Scrambled egg is allowed too. I use Eggbeaters, and eat it very slowly, with lots of chews. Seems to go down pretty well. Again -- be careful not to cook it too dry. The softer and moister, the better. I also picked up some puree cookbooks which just arrived in the mail today, to give me ideas. My fear is that I'll eat one thing so much that I won't be able to look at it for the rest of my life. Variety is key, I suspect! Best of luck finding foods you can tolerate and that will make you feel better. The liquid phase is brutal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
