Depression & Anxiety medication

Recommended Posts

I have been on antidepressants for over 14 years. Does anyone know if you continue taking your same doses after surgery. My pills are capsules, which I believe we'll just sit in the smaller stomach and potentially cause ulcers, has anyone had experience with this.

I've not had surgery yet, it's Sept 12th, but have the same question.

I also have this question. I spoke with my psychiatrist at my last appointment about the possibility of weight loss surgery, and he said if I decided to move forward, he would work with the surgeon to determine whether any of my medications may pose difficulty, and we could find alternative ways to take them or consider different drugs (which I am loathe to do, because the combination I have been on for the last 18 months is the most effective I have ever taken). Has anyone had to change their medication?

Just had surgery last Thurs. I take an antidepressant (for MDD) and my surgeon had me stop it only the day of surgery and for 3 days afterward. Since it takes a while to build up in the system, she wasn't concerned about it being depleted after just a few days. Since I couldn't crush it and it's not a capsule I can open, she just wanted to be sure my stomach would tolerate it once I did take it. I started taking it again Mon. and so far have had no problems. I just make sure to have some milk, Soup or Protein Shake in my pouch and not take it on an empty stomach.

I also talked with my psychiatrist about it prior to surgery and he said I'd stay on the same dose until I come back for my next check up with him in late Sept. He didn't anticipate needing to change the dose due to surgery.

Hope this helps.

Best of luck to you all!

Thanks. I sure understand not wanting to change meds that are working well. Glad to hear i might not be off my meds long. I was afraid of maybe bad withdrawal or seizures from suddenly stopping these meds. Keep in touch folks, ok?

I have been on MDD meds since before my Rue-en-y in 2002 and only needed to adjust the dosage. Don't worry, they won't just sit in your pouch. The do dissolve.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
