I'm never going to get this surgery---discouraged :(

Recommended Posts

Long story short, I have been going to my doctors since November of last year when I was 255 with concerns about unexplained rapid weight gain. Now, its is August, I have been working with the weight and wellness center since March , but I have gone up to 284 and I am just getting zero support from any medical professional. They keep telling me to cut my calories, exercise, etc etc. I am already at 800-1000 calories a day, and swimming for an hour 6 days a week. I have met my insurance requirement of 6 months but the doctors at the weight and wellness center will not even see me until I've lost 10% of my weight. I have followed everything they wanted me to do, and done all the tests. Yet I leave every appointment crying because I am not meeting their weight loss expectations. Feeling completely discouraged and unsupported.

How much weight do you need to lose and by when? How many carbs are you eating? I did low carb (under 20g) and low fat preop and lost 15 lbs. three months out from surgery I do low carb higher fat and have lost 44 lbs I would have to agree to cut carbs significantly to reach your qualifying goal weight for surgery.

I'm so sorry you're having a tough time. Are you going to a bariatric center or just a wellness center? If you're not getting anywhere with your current WLS practice have you considered going to another surgeon or surgeons for a consult? You want to work with a center that gives you excellent service/care pre & post surgery as this can be a challenging journey to embark on.

Regarding issues losing weight right now, I recommend using an app (e.g. MyFitnessPal) to track everything you consume each day and weighing your food. This will tell you your exact calorie count and help with proper portion sizes, and are crucial tools to utilize post WLS.

Good luck!

Unexplained weight gain as in.. You were just eating salads and the weight piled on ? Did they find a reason for this unexplained weight gain? After wls you eat about 800+ calories. If you are 100% only eating 800 calories and not losing a lb what do you feel weight loss surgery will help with? ...Unless....Your possibly eating more than 800 calories...Sometimes.. And admittedly need help with Portion Control like the rest of us. For Me the first step was being honest with myself. Yes I ate low calorie all day. Higher than I needed other times. It adds up. But only you know the truth. If you have a medical condition causing you to gain when you are eating in a deficit that needs to be addressed before WLS. No judgment just trying to help.

Try the preop diet for 2 weeks and see what happens. It's literally 2 Protein Shakes a day with 4oz of lean meat and non starchy veg like salad or broccoli with a squirt of dressing with plenty of Water. No cheese no bacon bits no croutons. Just lettuce cucumbers bell peppers onions things of that sort.

Where are you located? State, etc?

Can you get an insurance coordinator to assist w another facility? Do you have a primary care physician that can help you along w the wellness center?

Send a list of what you are eating and drinking to this forum.

That's what I'm thinking as well. If it's not a thyroid issue something else is going on. I "couldn't lose weight" and was convinced of it, till I went on the preop diet and lost 15lbs in two weeks.
I wasn't weighing measuring or tracking food before preop but still thought I was eating well. Clearly I was not. I too wonder if the OP can't lose weight and actually gained on 800-1000 calories how this surgery will help. I'd have my thyroid checked and suggest really looking at what is actually being eaten. The math doesn't add up.

Exactly what I was thinking.. Especially as she has said she has done tests and they are telling her the same things sounds like they have tested and they have found no medical reason for the gain? But perhaps she will come back an elaborate, and know we are just trying to help as I know I used to be dead sure I was barely eating anything to gain , I Believed it. I would call that denial. But if she is sure she is only having 800 cals I would keep chases the doctors to find out whats happening, and if she has such amazing control to be eating 800 cal since march and still piling on the lbs she doesnt need wls as surelly the lbs will still pile on?

If OP ever comes back...

Just switch Drs. I was 365 at my first visit, not required to lose any weight prior, followed the 10 day liver shrinking diet, 358 on day of surgery. I am in the low 180s right now. I have lost weight just fine without having to lose weight pre-op. If I could lose weight pre-op I wouldn't have had surgery.

Do you weigh all your food and track it? Every single thing?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
