Do you think it's too early to eat pasta, bread, etc?

I had my surgery March 22nd my nutritionist said to wait after 6 months, but my friend who had her surgery at a different hospital said she can eat Pasta, bread, tortillas, etc 4 months after her surgery. We both got the sleeve so I don't get why our months are different to eat stuff like that. It's 5 months for me not eating those things. Should I wait after 6 months or should I eat just little bits at a time? What are your thoughts?

I would wait. Carbs are calorie laden and they aren't filling. Also, since surgery, noodles and Pasta are kind of gross and pasty tasting for me. So it was an easy transition.

It depends on you and your unique carb tolerance...

Some people tolerate carbs a few months post-op without issues. Others develop intense cravings and notice frequent plateaus and weight loss stalls upon re-introducting carbs.

I tolerate carbs well and eat bread, Pasta and tortillas regularly. Then again, I run 20+ miles a week and lift weights 3 times weekly, so my body uses the carbs to fuel my workouts.

For those who are less active, carb re-introduction often spells REGAIN. This is just my humble opinion, but Protein should be the main focus during the first post-op year.

Why start eating carbs again at all? That seems counterproductive.

(In my humble opinion, of course.)

i have not had bread in two years, why bother going down the empty calorie road.

bread and Pasta and such have a psychological effect on me as well as a physical one. I didn't become overweight eating Protein and vegetables! These are the foods I turn to for emotional comfort and I have to deal with that. It is better for me to abstain completely and just be creative in learning to eat in a way that satisfies and does not involve grains and sugars.

That's sounds like a good plan. I'm not nearly doing as much exercise as you so I don't think I should start eating it yet. I'll wait another year or two to start eating it. Thank you for your feed back!

I eat small amounts of carbs once or twice per week in the form of whole wheat Pasta (1/4 cup) and FlatOut wraps. They have one with added Protein. I use 1/2 of one with my tuna salad (yum!) I do have fruit everyday and occasionally I'll steal a small bite of potato from my husband's dinner plate. So far I've had no problems doing this. I've also noticed that when I'm in a stall if I add just a small serving of a carb per day breaks me through it. It's amazing how just a small change in diet can get things going again!

If you are craving Pasta you should try edamame spaghetti. It is high Protein and low carb, and closer to pasta than any other lower carb options I have tried. It also cooks super fast and a very small amount is much more filling than regular pasta. Plus, it's 100% soybeans. It's more expensive than regular pasta, but like I said, a little goes a long way. I get it at my local costco for about half the price I've seen it anywhere else.

The patients at the hospital I got surgery at clear patients for all foods after 4 weeks (yes, that includes these evil, evil "carbs") as long as they don't feel uncomfortable after eating the food.

In the end it's your choice alone if and when you want to experiment with foods.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
