Hot Flashes and diarrhea

Recommended Posts

Had my gastric sleeve done on 8/23. First 7 days after op all clear liquid diet. My diet consists of Water and Isopure Protein Drink (clear) and 42g. I am using the Multivitamin patch from the BariatricPal Store (which has Niacin).

I've been experiencing random hot flashes, sweating, and have diarrhea frequently. It comes and goes. I can't imagine this is dumping syndrome since I haven't even moved on to any remotely solid? Is this just my body adjusting? Do I have an infection somewhere?

Call your doc. To me it sounds like your adrenals are storming cuz your ketones are high-er. I'm pre-op, but that happens to me when I take my diet below 6g of carbs. I get the "meat sweats," flushing, anxiety, bounding pulse, feel the need to take deep breathes. ((hugs)) It helps me to get lots of Water and to space out my meals more and make each meal smaller.

Try stopping the Isopure. I wasn't using it at first, but then added it and I started experiencing your same symptoms. Once I stopped I felt so much better. Hopefully that's all that's going with you. A call to your surgeon is still probably warranted.

Thank you for your response. That wasn't sitting well with me each time I take a sip. I'm also using a Vitamin Patch - so I thought the heat flashes might be related to the Niacin.

Niacin makes me turn hot, beet red and itch. But I read that hormones go a little crazy trying to adjust after surgery.

Reactive Hypoglycemia. Some of these fake sweeteners can cause it. When I gave up meat and was existing on Protein Bars and other Protein supplements it happened to me. It was pretty terrible, I thought I was dying 1/2 the time until I figured out what was going on.

Never had that issue with Premier Protein though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
