Hey girls and guys,

I'm now into my pureed stage and compared to some stories I find that mine has gone oh to well.... I'm keeping plenty of fluids down, I'm easily keeping pureed foods down, but I feel this isn't what I should expect based on what I've read. I find that I can easily keep down a whole large cup full of Soup (pureed not yet solids) down with no hesitation, I've read that if you 'overeat' to look out it will soon be coming back up your throat and this hasn't happened. I even self doubt I've had the surgery until I look down at my scars. I'm passing Water frequently, probably slightly less than I used to, but it seems too good to be true and I don't want to keep ringing my nurses and them finding I'm nagging.

I keep reading that I wouldn't be able to keep more than 4 tablespoons each meal (pureed) down yet I find I can keep 8-12 tablespoons down. I'm happy to keep to 4 but I'm at that confused stage.

If any one has advice with:

1. Should 4 tablespoons satisfy my hunger?

2. Should I check in with my nurse with how easy it's been?

3. Worrying with the amount of food I can eat at such an early stage.

Any help, advice or experiences would truly be incredible right now. Sorry if I don't make sense it's late and it's been on my mind.

Thanks, Dan.

Everybody is different. It is easier for some than others. Just keep in mind that the fact that you can eat doesn't mean you should. Don't eat more than what your surgeon or nutritionist suggests. This is the time to change your habits, not to see how much you can eat before you throw up.

When you move onto dense Protein you should be able to feel the restriction, keep up with the amount your nut said even if you feel you have more space. As you are still healing you may not know the signal for had enough.

Hey Daniel! I was sleeved on 8/2 and I've had a similar experience as you. One thing I've noticed in my experience, is that feeling full doesn't feel the same as before surgery. I have to really pay attention to my stomach when I eat. It seems to be closer to the sternum that I feel a pressure that is my full feeling. Plus, it is VERY important to eat slow. Our bodies, even before surgery, take time to register that they are full. If we eat too fast, we will likely eat too much before the sensation hits. At least that's my experience. And I'll second what dreamingsmall said. It really does make a huge difference. Hope this helps build up your confidence.

Hi Daniel - I had my surgery on 11th August and i feel exactly the same. getting fed up with pureed food and feel that I probably could go on to the soft food stage now but I'm too frightened! I haven't had any reflux or 'overfull' feelings since the op. If you speak to your nurse, let me know what they say as it will stop me having to call :).

I too had a similar situation well into my first month after surgery not feeling full no throwing up . Things definitely changed when I started solid foods exspecially meat (chicken, beef). liquids are easier on the body and only stay in the stomach for 15-20 mins where food sits and digests for a bit longer. You will get to know your body and what you can an can't eat, how much and what puts you over the edge. I'm three and a half months out and I am still learning what I can eat. My nutritionist said sometimes you cant tolerate meat till 6 months. So as of right now I am a practicing to be a vegetarian.

I have this same problems and I'm only 11 days post op. I can eat all puree no problem and can drink Water freely. I've had nothing coming back up, no pain, no bloating, no heartburn... It makes me worry that I'll fail. It's really frustrating hearing people say to just eat less. If I had the restraint I wouldn't of needed the surgery in the first place. I just want to move onto solids faster so I can feel full and not like I'm constantly hungry.

Well your going to have to change your frame of mind and get some control. Yes we all had problems with control. But now there are consequences of over eating like causing a leak etc. As long as you are not eaten more than your plan it doesn't matter about not feeling certain thing's. This will come. Your body is still healing. This is no indication you will fail. When your on dense Protein you will feel the restriction.

I haven't gone off my plan. I'm just sick of people who it works for saying to eat less. Just because I'm not feeling full and I'm frustrated doesn't mean I'm not doing well. Ive lost 28.2lb so far... Sometimes people just want to vent, it's not always about solutions. Sometimes you just want to know people understand and to say yes that does sound pretty lame. Its sad that people who have the same problem with food can simply say 'get some control". Maybe you should of before you had surgery then? It's not helpful, is it? I'm 6ft tall and young. Maybe my metabolism is just faster and I'm just bloody hungry. Simple as that.

I have been having the same worries. I am one week post op and have no issues drinking plenty of Water and my Protein Shakes. I have been having between 8 and 11 oz shake for Breakfast and then a coffee mug of broth for lunch. I find that in the evenings is when I have difficulty. I can only drink 6 oz or less of Protein Shake for dinner. Throughout the day I have 2 popsicles and when I am extra hungry I have a Jello. I don't feel any real bad discomfort when drinking or eating the jello. I feel like it's almost too easy. I am worried about this because surgery was my last resort. I lost 17 pounds on my 2 week preop diet. I had surgery exactly a week ago today and have lost 7 pounds in that week.

Your nerve endings are not even fully connected , you are a week post op , you are still healing, the feelings will change as you heal, and move onto solid food when your plan allows you.:)

I am in my 14th week and never had issue with liquids or Soups. I could eat a whole container of yogurt as soon as I was on that stage. I could drink a whole mug of Soup (I wasn't necessarily interested in it, but physically could do it). I also drank 8 oz of Protein Shakes as soon as I started on them.

I experience the sense of restriction primarily on dense Proteins and to some degree veg although the sensation of fullness is really different on veg.

When I am full on an animal Protein it is an immediate and sudden sense of discomfort. With veggies and denser carbs (beans, whole grains) it is a more gradual sense of being sated and I can eat more ounces.

My sense is this is pretty common and I would not be too concerned.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
