So... I scheduled my psych appt for 2 weeks from now... I have no idea what to expect...

I literally just had mine yesterday! Here's my experience. I'm sure it's a variation of this for most people.

Office scheduled me for 2 1-hr appointments back to back - one hour to take the MMPI personality test, one hour to talk with psychologist. I think I only needed about 1 hour to complete it all, but I'm sure they want to make sure everyone has enough time.

Psychologist just asked questions like

  • What made you look into weight loss surgery?
  • What other diets/exercise plans have you tried?
  • What do you think will be the hardest change/transition to make?
  • Have you told anyone you're having the surgery?
  • What does your husband think? Is he supportive?

Basically, he was just getting a feel for if I understood what changes would need to be made, if I was able to recognize and acknowledge what will be difficult for me, as well as what type of support system I have in place.

The MMPI test (you can google it, lots of people talk about it) asked around 330 true/false statements that I had to answer by filling in like a scantron bubble sheet. The doctor said if I don't hear from him after our appointment is done, that's a good thing, there were no red flags for him to follow up on.

Seemed a bit scary beforehand but it's really not bad at all :)

Thank you for sharing... I figured it would be something like that but the unknowns can be scary

When I had my appointment, I went to see the one that I already had before the process and it took less time than that. He asked those same questions above but worded them differently and there wasn't any test to take. He just filled out some form and faxed it back to the hospital. He already knows how I am so the appointment was a lot shorter and an easier process. We both had a mutual agreement.

I have my psych appt for 4 weeks from now...I agree not sure what to expect..but I have read on here from other people's experience what type of questions they will be asking. My question is how long does it take for the insurance company to approve the surgery .??

The psych clearance was extremely easy from my point of view--we talked a bit and I unexpectedly was just spilling every thought and feeling I had at the moment (very unlike me!). It probably took half an hour or so and that was it. Out of all the many, many steps I had to take, this was not an issue at all.

For Seashell29, it varies among insurance companies. Most likely someone in your surgeon's office--a coordinator or adviser--will be able to tell you this.

Mine was just like a conversation with a friend. She also had the sleeve and gave me some tips. We talked about my background, health and weight history, work background, lifestyle, why I want to do this, my support system, and she also asked about my history of food, drugs, alcohol/verbal/sexually abuse, past counseling history. I had to do a questionnaire and I marked off that I had a quick temper and she asked me about that.

I actually enjoyed it. I know that's what she gets paid to do, but I sort of wish we could be friends, because we had some things in common.

Much less stressful than I thought it was going to be. But I'm so uninteresting. Two divorces where I had counseling, but no history of any sort of abuse of anything.

2 days to 4 weeks I know that's a big difference but that's what I have read...

It's just the waiting.. that is the hard part in this whole process.but I know it will all seems like a tiny bit in the whole process of my lifestyle change. I don't consider this a diet but a new way of living my life.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
