Recommended Posts

I'm 2 days post op and feeling better than yesterday. Experiencing some spasms when drinking. Spasm meds work a little, any suggestions?

Just got to battle on, believe things get better. Everything you do has to be done slowly. Your body is getting used not having a bunch of room for stuff and it's adjusting.

That's what I thought. It's just amazing how different it is now. I used to be able to down a bottle of Water in one shot, now a small sip is painful.

Same here, I can have eggs now and I can barely put 2 down. I could eat 4 egg omlette and a pound of bacon no prob. The way we eat food is drastically changed and our bodies need to adjust. Any questions you have don't hesitate to ask.

Hi MRH300,

It may take about a month for you to drink more than a couple sips at a time. I'm almost 6 weeks out and I can finally gulp some Water though still less than I could normally. Also, water tastes good again. You'll find that your taste buds change. :)

I'm 1 month post op. Before the surgery I used to be so well hydrated, drinking 2-3L of water a day and used to love the taste of water but now I I'm dehydrated most of the time and can't stand the taste of water. It's depressing.

I'm about 3 weeks post op and can drink way more in one sitting! I was so discouraged at first but time really is the key!

It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. Be willing to experiment. After surgery, my taste buds changed dramatically. Even Water changed. In the hospital it tasted excessively chlorinated and I could not drink it. So I experimented. sugar free popsicles became my best friend. Some individuals find hot or cold can help with fluids. For me, I found that I could tolerate flavored water. So I began using Crystal Light. I also found a new drink Bai which I liked cold. In the winter, I found that I tolerate Hot Drinks such as piping hot cocoa. But you have to use the "No Sugar Added" variety. Also fine English teas were very good.

The Fluid requirement is met by a combination. It is not only the water that you drink each day. But also the water you drink when you take your Vitamins and medicine. It is the milk you drink. It is the fluids content of the Protein Shakes. It is the water component of the Soups you take. It is met by flavored water such as Crystal Light. It is met by sugar free popsicles. It is met by tea and Decaf coffee. It is a combination of all the fluids that you consume during the day.

I'm so sorry. I also drank so much pre-op and became sad and frustrated after surgery and could only drink with Raspberry Lemonade Crystal Light packets as water had an off-putting chemically taste. I found the trick for me is to buy a bag of Sonic ice (or any pellet/bullet ice), fill a cup full to the top, and use bottled water - I use Deer Park. It became easier for me as time went on and I can drink almost normally now as long as the water is ice cold. Ice cold water also doesn't seem to reflux as badly as normal water.

I truly hope things get better soon. Dehydration is no joke and that must feel awful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
