August Sleevers-How are you doing??

Recommended Posts

People resent you getting fit with the help of surgery because they feel you didn't suffer enough to get there. They want you to suffer for being fat.

They also are threatened if you go from obese to more fit than they are.

In short, people are the worst.

What I'm interested in is whether any of you have folks in your lives who are also heavy who are taking your success to heart and thinking about also getting sleeved.

Frankly, I sort of assumed there would be, as I have several truly heavy friends and family members. But nope, no one is into this at all. Even the heavy people who are supportive of me don't seem to be considering doing the surgery themselves. They're continuing to double down on new gym regimes, new diets, etc.

I was honestly expecting my brother in law to at least get serious about diet and exercise. Surprisingly there’s no one in my life currently the size/BMI for surgery but my BIL will be if he doesn’t get his **** together. Actually, there’s one person...my mom’s boss and family friend who has type II diabetes and would qualify but instead tries and fails bullshit multi level marketing diets that aren’t sustainable because it’s prepackaged mediocre food. However, I haven’t seen him since losing the bulk of my weight so I don’t know if I could be inspiration. This surgery was amazing for me and I praise it whenever anyone knows and asks or guesses.

Some of my friends have said they wish they could have it done but can’t afford it, for them it’s the cost. In the uk just about everyone has to pay for bariatric surgery, the nhs will only pay if it’s life threatening and then you have to wait years. Private Insurance won’t pay so for me I had to pay $16,000. Luckily I had recently retired (early) and had a good pay out so my husband said it was the best thing we could use the money towards to make sure I lived longer to enjoy my retirement and the grandkids. I am proud I had it done and my friends all seem to support me.

For me its my sister, unfortunately its the cost because her type of insurance wont cover any cost. She is so depressed and agitated because she has changed the way she eats and goes to gym 6 days a week. Im giving her all the encouragement i can to help her get thru her own journey. Im the best supportive sister i can be, she is my world and all i want is happiness for her!!😀

Have u suggested the presurgery diet to help her. I almost skipped the surgery because I had such good results from the diet alone

I have no idea if this is a case of cause-and-effect, but I ran into a former coworker at the doctors' office; he's quite heavy and has struggled with losing weight. Someone else later told me he was going to have the surgery . . . he's one of the very few people who remarked that I looked different (at about 60 pounds lost). But he hasn't communicated with me at all about his decision. Either way--I'm happy to think he's going to take charge of this problem. He's young, he's smart, and he's nice--he deserves the best future he can have.

I have, she doesnt believe she can do it. She is in a weight watchers group and seems to like it, but still not losing weight. Me personally, they are just like a carnival and meant to take your money. Even her Dr told her that. Ive tried all that, and it didnt work for me as well.

Weight Watchers works to an extent, unless you are insulin resistant - which I believe many of us are - once they allowed fruit to NOT count toward points I could not lose much weight. And it goes in reverse - you gradually eat less and less food (points) and that messes your metabolism up more. So each time you attempt the program you get less results. With wls - you start out with smaller portions/ounces and add more as your metabolism revs up. And then the constant sales pitch for products plus changing the program every two years so you need more new products - point calculator, books, points guides, etc etc. just became less of a support system.

Today I'm 7 months post op... I've gone from 294 to 224 lbs. I've lost a total of 70 pounds since preop 62 since surgery and 89 lbs from my highest of 313. It has been such an emotional roller coaster for me but I'm so very glad I went through with this surgery. I know for a fact- I would have never been able to lose 70 pounds on my own and keep it off. I'm still a ways to go but I'm positive about my journey and I've stopped comparing my loss to others and that's helped me so much ---and of course the fact that I look damned good. will post progress pics when I have a chance. Hope you all are accepting and enjoying this journey for what it Is! A lifestyle change that will only benefit you! Love yourself enough to not compare your rate of loss to others and take it day by day. That's how I did it. Hope this helps someone who feels down about there "average" loss.

I should also mention that I've inspired my niece who is only 5'2 And 280 lbs to go ahead and go through the 6 month process to getting approved for vsg surgery. She is only 21 so I want her to enjoy the life she deserves. She's will be having surgery August 2018! Some people will keep trying to lose weight on their own and then there's people who know with certainty that they need this tool to lose. I'm glad she realizes that it's way too hard to keep losing and gaining it back the 'natural' way. Some people need drastic measures to improve their health. If that means I should cut out 80% of my stomach so be it.

Ugh, weight watchers. I have joined it so may times over the years, it’s embarrassing. I drove by it the other day and I happily said, out loud too, never again! My goal is a healthy relationship with foods, eating the appropriate amount of real, clean food. I hated how WW always pushed fat free cheese and artificial stuff. Saying no more to weight watchers was actually a very cathartic moment for me. My bariatric support group and this site are where it’s at for me now! No more counting points, EVER!

Hi All!
Congratulations on all of your successes! I had my Gastric Sleeve surgery on 8/21! So far so good. My start weight was 241, my goal is 150 (i'd even be happy with 160) and i am currently 177.
I am happy with my success but i wanted to know if anyone was experiencing something i am since we are all around the same time out. I have had little to no side effects or acid or anything like that. Recently, at night only I have been having this sensation that literally keeps me up at night. I feel a warm sensation in my throat like something is about to come up. I DO NOT eat before bed, i take a small sip of Water to take my Iron pill. Just even 2 weeks ago, i would drink alot before bed but this did not happen. I don't really feel too good today and have some reflux, so i'm wondering if it was particularly bad last night simply because i don't feel good. But it has been happening the past 3-4 nights. Also of note, i take a nap during the day sometimes while my son naps and it doesn't happen to me at all. I'm literally wondering if it's in my head. I spit up one time after drinking too much before bed and it was horrible. Maybe now i'm afraid it'll happen again.

I just cannot make sense of it. I was previously having a small snack before bed (2 hours before bed or so) and this would not happen. It's driving me crazy!!! I can't live like this because i'm not falling asleep until 1am and i get up very early.

Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all and congrats again! Crystal

What is your starting height? I was sleeved the same day, and had the same sw. I am now at 172. I am 5'10. I actually have the same goal as you as well!!!!

My stats are almost the same as so many of you! Starting 247, currently 70
pounds down. Goal is 100. I have been working out with a personal trainer for strength training. I stay around 800 calories a day. I have had to get rid of every single pair of pants and jeans I own.

But lately the scale will not move! I know, plateau. Same thing you read hear all the time. But man! It’s frustrating and depressing. How in the world can you eat 800 calories a day and not lose weight??

Very close to my stats! HW: 243, SW: 200, CW: 152 ... and I've barely lost anything in the last 2 months. Total plateau. I have 22 pounds to go but nothing is moving. Maybe I need to go back on a liquid diet for a week and see if that resets me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
