Keto transition pre op/post op?

Recommended Posts

I've been following a ketogenic diet for the last 3 months and have been pretty successful. My surgeon originally wanted me to lose about 30 pounds and I have lost 25 and he has been happy with me so far. My nutritionist did not suggest Keto, I kind of just took it in my own hands to follow keto instead of the high Protein low fat diet they recommended. My main question here is, if you followed keto up until you got close to your surgery date what did you do when you got close to surgery? Did you go back to high protein low fat, or follow keto right up until the pre op liquid diet? I'm not sure what I wanted to do. My surgery isn't officially scheduled yet but I'm probably looking at early October. High protein low fat and actually eating carbs is going to be so weird for me and I'm afraid I'll gain or stop losing if I start eating carbs. I know it isn't likely but when you do keto for so long you understand. So please anybody with any advice or peace of mind to give feel free!! Tell me what you did when your surgery date got closer and if you began following keto at maintenance after surgery or if you did not go back to keto. Thanks!

here's a thought --- how about you DO EXACTLY AS YOUR SURGEON TELLS YOU.

did that ever cross your mind?

Here's a thought --- how about you CALM DOWN. I asked advice on a subject that is widely known about in the wls community that you obviously have no knowledge of, so why bother replying? I am doing exactly as my surgeon told me, he told me to lose the weight and I lost it. Thanks for your negative input, though. You must have had a really bad day.

now don't take liberties with the facts... you said he wanted you to do a high Protein, low fat program.

and instead, you think you know better and are engaging in an ultimately unsustainable ketogenic diet, and coming on here looking for validation for it.

Well for one, I said my nutritionist recommended a high protein low fat diet. Not my surgeon. Never was looking for validation. I was simply asking if anyone had experience with practicing a ketogenic diet pre op, and if they experienced a change in their weight coming off of it. Plenty of wls patients use ketosis as a tool along with their surgery. Sorry if you've been misinformed that it is unsustainable, it's one of the best lifestyle changes I've ever made and has been great for weight loss, satiety and energy. Sorry to see you've had another bad day so you had to come on a Bariatric forum to be a bully. I hope things start looking up for you.

thanks, but i've known about ketogenic diets since around 2000 and have plenty of experience and knowledge about them. but i'm glad you're enjoying its current overhyped popularity as a leading sub-reddit.

i will literally bet every last dollar to my name that you won't be able to eat a 80% fat diet and keep your blood ketones above 1.0mmol/L for a year much less the rest of your life. that is if it doesn't give you clinical insulin resistance long before you give up.

i would presume you are getting bariatric surgery so that you can live a somewhat normal life, eating a normal healthy diet, and leave extreme and unsustainable diets like Keto in the past. but apparently not. so.... have fun with that.

p.s. - since you are keto-master, i'm sure you've read how the insulin hypothesis is dead by now. if not, get to googling.

p.p.s. - your nutritionist and surgeon are not on the same team/office? another problem identified...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
