Liver Shrinking Diet

Recommended Posts

One thing I've learned from this board is that everybody's situation and everybody's surgeon is different! I'm just curious, what did / does your liver shrinking diet consist of?

Two weeks long. Three Protein Shakes a day, one Protein Bar OR Greek yogurt, and one meal of 4 ounces lean meat/chicken, two small pieces of fruit, and as many non-starchy vegetables as I want. I start Monday!

2 week No carb diet:

meat, green veggies, eggs, and cheese. Max carbs per day is 10g.

But I've been doing a liquid/pureed diet to lose weight since I gained some and to make sure I dont gain anymore in these 2 weeks since I gain fast and lose slow.

1 week low carb, followed by 2 weeks liquid diet. The liquid diet is Protein Shakes, strained Soups, low/no calorie drinks, SF Jello. The goal was to lose 5% body weight between the time of initial evaluation to the surgery date. For me, that worked out to about a month. Had to go from 250lbs to at least 236.

started two days ago. Mine is two weeks... 3 carnation instant Breakfast (essentials) - 1 yogurt - 2 pieces of fruit -1 cup of broth - Jelllo & sugar free popsicles. NO coffee - not even Decaf ... My doctor told me on Tuesday that he doesn't want me to be hungry - so if I need to supplement with a scrambled egg or an occasional oatmeal or an extra yogurt that is fine with him. I have been dreading this... but on the second day it really isn't that bad... I am putting Protein Powder into my shakes and honestly I am not hungry - I like the cucumber idea because chewing and crunching on something is the only thing that is making me mildly crazy... I also heard ice chips... so far so good..

Two weeks for me and I have a lower BMI already (38). Up to 24 ounces of Protein Shakes plus one meal of 4 oz Protein and half cup of veggies.

I am adding in two raw veggie Snacks throughout the day so I don't kill any innocent people.

I have a large liver and they assured me this will not be an issue because I inquired about it. I guess because I am so close to my BMI that they are not going to have me do much except a few days before.

I sure hope they dont come back and say - ooops, we should have had you on the liver shrinking diet and now we have to move surgery.

This is interesting. I started mine three weeks out (so a week ago since my surgery is 9/25).

First week was:
Protein Shakes for Breakfast and Lunch
Small amount of fruit, cheese, or nuts for 2 snacks
Protein (300 cal or less) and veggies for dinner

The two weeks before surgery (started yesterday):
Protein shakes for Breakfast, lunch, and Dinner (full shake)
Protein shakes for 2 Snacks (half a shake)
1 to 2 cups of veggies with lunch and dinner

Also includes clear sugar free liquids. woohoo...

2 weeks of a modified diet, which is 3 or 4 Protein Shakes and one low cal low carb meal, then they want me to do a all liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery!

I was pretty faithful on my pre-op diet, but after surgery, I found out that I have a pretty small liver, and the surgeon didn't need to use the retractor at all.

im still glad I stuck to the diet, because now I'm that much farther toward my goal!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
