To bypass or not to bypass...

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I had a band fitted 6 years ago of which worked really well for first few years and then it all went horribly wrong. I had to have it removed early March of this year.

I'm now free falling and I need to do something soon, before I pile every ounce back on!

I've read up on benefits of both bypass and sleeve but hoping someone out there would just tell me what one to go for! Anyone? No..??

Ok...does either one's benefits outweigh (boom boom!!) the other??

thanks in advance! 🙂

If you have GERD problems go with the bypass as the sleeve will make it worse. Bypass patients lose more weight and keep it off in the long run. My bypass surgery is on 9/12/17 and am so ready and excited!

Hi :)
This is just what I know from the seminar I went to pre-surgery! I'm no expert and I could very well be misinformed.

With the sleeve, you are less likely to get dumping syndrome and more likely to regain weight 10-15 years down the road (I think the number is like 30% or something like that). If you don't follow your diet or if you revert back to old ways. With the bypass, you're more prone to experiencing dumping syndrome, but less likely to put on weight 10-15ish years down the road.

You can always revert from the sleeve to the bypass, but you can't convert the bypass to the sleeve.

I got the sleeve 2 weeks ago so I'm still new to this, but my boyfriend got the sleeve 11 months ago and is doing very well - down about 120lbs! But we have a mutual friend who got the bypass about 18 months ago and has already hit his goal weight - from over 400# to 175.

I guess it's something you'd have to sit and discuss with your Dr [emoji16]

I had sleeve in 2011.Then had severe gerd.Had bypass in Nov 2016.I would just have bypass. If you have sleeve chances are you will need bypass later.

I had the lap band in 2010 and just had it removed last week. Before the removal he took all the Fluid out and I gained 40 pounds just like that. So I am going with the sleeve and November I agree if you go with the sleeve and you're still not happy then you can go to bypass but you can't go to the sleeve after you've bypassed. I had a friend that had gastric bypass and she didn't follow the rules and ended up having all sorts of health issues and dumping syndrome it just seems like too severe surgery to me. But I guess it all depends on you your health how overweight you are Etc

Basically what LifeChangesLori said. I'm four months post-op Gastric Bypass. I'm not a surgeon or anything but I'd say go for Bypass. I did it because I thought the benefits outweighed the benefits of the sleeve and I needed the extra help with Portion Control. I did it because I only wanted to go through one surgery and not have to risk coming back for a revision. Never had experience with the lapband. This was the first surgery.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. Your comments are much appreciated.

I had a consultation this morning, and have eagerly signed up for the bypass. I think the acid reflux swung it for me, along with greater restriction .... I didn't work with the band and I accept the result was totally my fault!

My operation is already booked for 16th October...excited and scared: mostly excited though!!

Once again HUGE thanks for your comments, and best of luck on your life changing journeys!! Xx

I am glad you decided on the gastric bypass and that it is the right choice for you. I am currently on day 3 of my 2 week liquid diet. OMG, so hungry and feel tired, weak. My surgery is 9/12

Fi72 I am so proud of you! I too accept the failure of the band being my fault and I'm going to go with the sleeve I have very minor acid reflux right now so I think I'll be okay but I'm super excited to take this journey with all of you. So many people blame the band and act like it's not worthy, I just think the band works for some just not all of us :-(

Fi72:

I am having it at Kaiser Sunnyside in Clackamas, Oregon.

I'm not so worried about the post op diet cuz I probably will not feel like eating, but right now I am about to eat my shoe lol!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
